Can't open pictures on disk

I have pictures saved on disk that I took with my sony digital camera. I just got a new computer and went from using Windows 95 to Windows xp. I am using the same picture program on the new computer that I was using on the old one. Everytime I try to open the disk to view the pictures, the computer prompts me that my disk is not formatted and wants to know if I want to format it. However if I put the disk in the digital camera I am able to view the pictures. Is there a way I can get these pictures open with the new windows or will I have to set my old computer back up to get these pictures open? Thanks for any help anyone can give!
I understand your problem, but your post lacks one thing. The details as to what program you are using and what type of camera you are using. You can always try running the program in compatability mode, if I got that right and if I didn't, oh well. Life is good. :) if you can get back with details, it will help.
