Try opening it from all possible sources: Control Panel, Windows Explorer, right-clicking on connection icon, etc.

Go to start, run, type sfc /scannow (space before slash), and see if that fixes it.

You may have to try a System Restore.

Sorry. No other ideas.

If all you have is modem to the ethernet card you don't have a network so network connections doesn't show any.

This is true, I have 4 machines and if I have only the 2 on that I have updated to sp2 and I try to go to my workgroup through the "entire network">"microsoft windows network" I cannot access my workgroup. I can access the shares by add a network place and put in a share like this \\computer\shared drive. Then there is a share in the "network places" that will work every time. Or I can place \\computer\drive in the address bar of Windows Explorer and that will work.
The weirdest thing is if I turn on either of the sp1 machines the "entire network">"microsoft windows network" will show all the computers and they are all accessable with every computer. For a test I had the 2 sp2 computers on and one of the sp1 computers on, and everything was working perfectly, then I disabled the sp1 computer's network connection and sure as sh*t I could no longer access either of the sp2 computers from the others "entire network">"microsoft windows network" any longer. I worked on this for a day and gave up.

Now I understand. My only thought is to run SFC /SCANNOW from the run menu and see if it will replace the missing/corrupt file. Note space between C and /.

Do you have Windows Firewall/Internet Connection sharing(ics) disabled in the Services.msc. I found that to be my problem.

I am also having the same problem with Window's Explorer or any explorer based application. An error message comes up that says, "Windows has encountered a problem..." and I am forced to close. All the icons will go blank for a few seconds and then the machine comes back. If I were to go to the Start menu I can start some applications like MS Word and even spyware applications. I have run spyware applications multiple times without any success. I can see the content of my folders from within applications, but I cannot open up any windows. I AM able to see things in safe mode. I think something must have downloaded and infected but cannot find it.
