Do you prefer 6.4 over the current version? Start > Run > C:\Windows\system32\dllcache see if you can find it in there and copy it up to system32
An even older version of media player (5.1) is available by running mplay32

To answer the second part of your question, you can create a shortcut to media player classic in the C:\Windows or C:\Windows\system32 folder named "mplayer32" assuming that there isn't already a file with that name. I do this quite a bit.
(Odd: I just did a file search and mplayer2 only appears in dllcache--but I can execute if directly from the Run dialog.)

Mplayer 2 is in 'c:\program files\windows media player'. If you copy it to c:\windows it will run when you use the Start > Run > mplayer2 thing.
Do yourself a favor BACKUP!!!
