Have you run any malware/spyware cleaners?
Run CCleaner to help speed things up.
Are you sure there isn't just a big lag in opening any of the programs you don't think are working?

yes i am sure there isnt a lag, i wait a long time, and nothing happens. i will try to run CCleaner and i will keep you informed, thank you very much!
*edit* i ran CCleaner and cleaned things up, but the problem persists.. any other suggestions?

You never responded to the suggestions in your original post here:

Jennifer SUMN, i tryed to restore registory as i said above, and i didnt try what the guy told me because the guy in the last response, that is also the one who told me to try to restore registory, told me it wouldnt work. so i have tryed everything mentioned.
and i forgot to mention that by deleting office, now all my programs, when i press start they are all .ink, i cannot open them, the icon is like a white page with a blue window with like all sorts of colored dots in it, the type of icon you get when you delete the program but the icon is still there, but cant open it of course.
please help, i am really confused and dont know what to try

i deleted Office by going into add/remove program then deleted it...
i already ran the registry module thing on CCleaner, but it didnt change a thing, in fact, i just noticed that i cannot open anything anymore because there isnt the "open" part when i right click an icon.

What version of Windows are you running?
Evidently you are using WinXP. Perform a system restore to a time prior to this problem.

Microsoft Windows XP
Home Edition
Version 2002
Service Pack 2
i did the restore rigistory in the control pannel i think, the maximum is 12%, i did the maximum but it didnt change anything, how do you but it back to a prior date, how do you set a date or something?

fred450, Go to the link below and scroll down to line 12 (left column) and click on "EXE (lnk and regfile) Fix for Windows XP" to download a reg file fix. Save the REG File to your hard disk. Double click it and answer yes to the import prompt.

But OtheHill, or anyone... can you explain to me how to perform a system restore to a time prior to the problem please

Go to the Start button> help and support> tools> system restore.
Choose the option to restore and then look for a restore date prior to your issues.
If you choose one and after the restore is performed it doesn't solve your problems undo the restore before choosing a different date.
Keep in mind that any programs installed after the restore date will no longer function.
Personal files in My Documents will be retained.

fred450, Go back to that link and on line 12 (left column)right click on "EXE (lnk and regfile) Fix for Windows XP" coose "save target as" and save it to your desktop. Then double click it to merge it into the registry.
If you can't run the file do the following:
Press CTRL-ALT-DEL and open Task Manager. Once there, click File, then hold down the CTRL key and click New Task (Run). This will open a Command Prompt window. Enter REGEDIT.exe and press Enter. Once regedit is open click File>Import and locate that reg file fix, hilite it and click Open.
Tufenuf

Tufenuf, there is no "save target as" but i will try "save link as".
EDIT: I have tryed it, i can open everything now! but the icon is still that white paper with a window with colored dots on it, the type you get when you deleted a program but the icon to the program is still there. but now it opens thank you, but have any idea how to restore de default icon anyone????OtheHill, i click on help and support, look in Pick a task and click on: Use Tools to view your computer information and diagnose problems
then it says: Tools
Pick from the list of tools and resources to help you manage and support your Windows operating system.
and there is nothing, no list, were do i click??? is it like in the control panel? is there a " Switch to Classic View" button or " Switch to Category View" button or something

fredd450, When you open Help and Support do you see "undo changes, restore system" in just about the middle of the page? If you do click on it to open System Restore.
Also try what I posted in my Response Number 13.
Tufenuf

Sorry, I don't need to use System restore and I should have looked instead of going by memory.
Go Start> help and support> system restore is right above tools.

System Restore can be started from the Run box in your Start menu.
Enter the command
system32/restore/rstrui.exe
in the run box.
Goin' Fishin' (Some day)

I JUST HAD TO WAIT, MY ICONS ARE BACK NOW.
THANK YOU TUFENUF MY 2 PROBLEMS ARE SOLVED BECAUSE OF YOU! RESPONSE 13 DID IT! THANKS A LOT MAN!
THANKS A LOT YOU TO OTHEHILL FOR HELPING I WILL KEEP THAT RESTORE THING IN MIND
THANKS GUYS!

fredd450, "but the icon is still that white paper with a window with colored dots on it"
To correct that problem right click your Desktop, choose Properties, under the Settings tab change the "Color Quality" from 32 bit to 16 bit, click Apply/OK. Now go back and under the Settings tab change it back from 16 bit to 32 bit. Doing this rebuilds the iconcache.db file.
Tufenuf

Good job Tufenuf.
fredd
In the future don't complicate your problems by installing more programs when you have problems with your system. Solve the problem.

yeah your right, thanks
but now i just need to try to solve the same type of problem but on the other session of the computer... grrrr... response 13 doesnt do it this time... it says the cannot import: C:/ blabla ...exefix.reg: Error accessing registry
anyone has a solution for this?

fredd450, "but now i just need to try to solve the same type of problem but on the other session of the computer... "
Can you explain this better. Is it another computer? Is it still Windows XP? What is the exact problem(s) and when does the problem happen.
Do you use Ad-aware with Ad-watch?
Tufenuf

it is another session on the same computer, and i dont even know whats ad-watch and ad-aware
i would like to try, if there isnt any other solution, to system restore, and i have tryed it, but it says to choose a date thats in bold, and the only date thats in bold is today. it doesnt help me that much if i can only restore to today because this problem started about two weeks ago

fredd450, In System Restore did you try to go back to the month of July using the backward arrow button on the calendar?
Tufenuf

fredd450, Explain exactly what this problem is. When does it happen, any error messages, etc. I'll be gone shortly.
Tufenuf

in this session, like 90% of the icons are .ink file. ive tryed that regfile.exe but it said something like: C:/******* exefix.reg: Error accessing registry
and also tryed going through the command prompt, etc.. like you previously said, but it gives me that same error message

fredd450, "ive tryed that regfile.exe but it said something like: C:/******* exefix.reg: Error accessing registry"
What regfile.exe? When do you get that error message? Did you try what I posted in Response Number 13?
Tufenuf

yes, the regfile is what you posted in response number 13, ive tryed it, and that error message pops up when i click on it on my desktop

fredd450, Go to the link below and download the "REG File Association Fix". Instructions for running it are on the page. If it imports into the registry then try Response Number 13 again.
http://www.dougknox.com/xp/file_ass...
Tufenuf

fredd450, Go to the same link in my Response Number 31 and download the "LNK (Shortcut) File Association Fix" and see if it imports and if the lnk file problem is corrected.
Tufenuf

it doesnt import
but i tryed the exe file association fix, it added to the registry, but the .ink problem isnt sloved

fredd450, I have to get out of here for today. Something is definitely screwed up with that computer. In the meantime click Start>Programs and see if you have Lavasoft Ad-aware (or something similar) in the listing and post back.
Tufenuf

no i dont have lavasoft, but if its a cleaning program, i think i only got CCleaner...but i can download lavasoft if it can help... anyway if you think of anything else or anyone has another solution, response it here.
thanks a lot for fixing it on my session though ;)

This "other session" you are talking about. Is it a limited user account without admin privileges? If so then you may not be able to fix it without upgrading the account to Admin user group. I may be wrong about this but it's worth a try.
Goin' Fishin' (Some day)

fredd450, Try the "Remove Restrictions Tool (RRT)" which you can download for Free at the link below. It has a "Registry Tools" box and may correct the registry access problem.
"Small and easy to use. Make sure you boot in to Safe Mode to use Remove Restrictions Tool (RRT). Just click on the buttons and it’ll do it’s job."http://www.raymond.cc/blog/archives...
Have you updated your virus/malware definitions and run full scans?
Tufenuf

i cant even download RRT, when i click download, it says: server not found.
and when i right click, save link as, then try to open it, it says: RRT.exe does not exist. It may have been renamed, moved, or deleted since it was downloaded.
i also tryed 3 different websites

fredd450, Try the possible fixes at the link below.
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/tweakuire...
Tufenuf

ive tryed method 1, a black window similar to the command prompt window opened for a second, then closed...
method 2, windows could not find gpedit.msc
because it only works with windows xp pro

Once regedit is open click File>Import and locate that reg file fix, hilite it and click Open.
The reg file fix (exe & lnk) you downloaded before.
Tufenuf

when i try to import, it does the same thing as when i click on it on the desktop, it says it could not import, it could not access registry.

fredd450, I'm just about out of ideas but try this. Go to the link below, click on "Security" (left side of page), click on "Disable/Enable Registry Editing Tools" (right column) and download the "regtools.vbs" file. Instructions for running it are on the page.
http://www.dougknox.com/index.html
Then try to import that reg file fix (exe & lnk) again.
Tufenuf

ive tryed downloading it but all it does is ennable and disable registry editing tools, when its ennabled, its like it is when i have the problem, the error message. when i disable, icannot open either one because it says its desiabled.
i am thinking of just save most of my more important files on my computer on cd's and just reformating the whole computer.
if i there isnt really any other way...
but thanks a lot for your help!

fredd450, I was afraid of that and I wish I could have come up with a solution but I'm totally out of ideas. Maybe someone will chime in with a solution.
Tufenuf
