Check the link below and check Admin tools,> Services to be sure all are set properly.

If available check Event Viewer for errors that may refer you to the services that are not working. Right click an Error then select properties for info on errors. Look under both Applications and System categories in Event Viewer. It might help to go back in Event Viewer to the first error shown in either category, then work forward towards more recent errors.

Somewhere on this Site ther is a chart for OS's. XP Home,xp Pro. and the Recommended settings.

God luck, this can drive you Nuts. Go slowly, restart after each correction, resist the temptation to make a bunch of changes all at once. Check Event Viewer Categories after each change to see if the error stops or a new one is created.

If you make more than one change you'll never figure out which change did what.

One last thing. If you change a setting from disabled or manual to Automatic be sure to manually Start the Service before you proceed.

Same for anything you set to stopped.

You may have to do this from the Right click menu or under the Service listing on the left side of the Screen.

Verify that the change is active (started, stopped or disabled) in the Event Viewer Screen before you proceed.

BTW I'm mostly guessing on this based on what you posted.

There is nothing to learn from someone who already agrees with you.

Thanks for the help. Actually, I am trying to access disk manager in order to recognize an external hard drive that I recently purchased. Is there any way to get my computer to recognize the hard drive without having to use the disk management program. I believe the drive needs to be formatted to my computer; it doesn't recognize anything when I plug it in.

Thanks in advance

You have more serious issues if you can't load Disk Managemnt

Without the external drive plugged in. clear all your event viewer logs. Reboot. Then try to open disk management.

Review the logs and post the errors.
