OS: windows xp home edition
CPU/Ram: pentium 4/512mb
Comment:

I tried to view a .ppt file and received a message that it was not a valid Power Point file (not true). Also can't open .jpg or .gif files in Paint Shop Pro 7, or .mp3 or .wav files in Windows Media Player.

I can't believe that all those programs are corrupted. There must be something wrong or missing in the OS.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

go to media player/tools/options/file types, and make sure the file associations are checked.
as for your image files, open any window-tools/folder options/file types, and check what .jpg, .jpeg, etc open with.

another way is to right click on the image, and open with....whatever program you use.

if psp doesnt open them, you may have to do the same with that as with media player

Have you run an uptodate virus scan recently in case this is causing problems.
