cant non-destructive system restore

Specs: Windows XP
stuck in endless restart cycle so need to restore, but cant do a non-destructive system restore due to windows service pack. If i cant do a n.d.s.r. my options are 1. do a full system restore and lose everything and have to install everything again (which i dont want to do) 2.or a full system restore with backup witch means i keep my data but have to install everything (what im thinking) My question really is do i have any other options or is there a way to do a non-destructive system restore even though i have the service pack??? or possibly a way to get rid of the service packwithout being able to access my desktop???

Try posting the error messages you're getting. Can you boot in Safe Mode using F8?
Sometimes it's best to backup data, and start fresh. NOBODY wants to do this when the system is 'comfortable'.
