Hi,
I've got a stumper for you guys.
A few hours ago, I was working in a word document when my computer just fizzes off. Upon restarting, nothing happens and my little motherboard LCD tells me my memory is loose. So I switched my memory around and now, everything appears to be fine except on restart no users are listed in the Windows XP Professional welcome screen. Its as if both administrator and standard user accounst were simply deleted. Pressing ctrl+alt+del twice brings up the old login screen, with my name in the domain with no password. This will not allow me to login either, but I have never set a password for anything.
This is the same for safe mode too. There are no users listed. Nothing works and I've searched all over the web, with no results.
Any help would be most appreciated,
Thank You in advance,
Baazar

Try System Restore, I have had good results using this way or Safe Mode, different to Last Known Good Configuration in Safe Mode.
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/helpandsupport/getstarted/ballew_03may19.mspx
System Restore is accessed the following way:

1. It's a good practice to shut down all other applications before using System Restore, as it requires a full-system reboot to complete the installation. Connecting to the internet is not required, however. So shut all applications. Then click "Start."

2. Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore. Then the program will load.
Here's a screen shot of the program-entry screen:http://www.techbuilder.org/recipes/60402485

Or,

If System Restore doesn't work in Normal Mode, it might work in Safe Mode.
Toggle F8 or Press Ctrl ( depends on your comp ) during bootup ( just before, verifying DMI pool, message comes on )
Select Safe Mode.

The 'guest' account may have been turned off?
This would then just boot straight into windows.

Try turning on the 'guest' account?

Hey guys,
Thanks for responding and trying to help, most appreciated.

Problem is, I can't access Windows in any form to make any changes. Safe mode included. All users have been deleted or hidden to access it with. All I can do is boot up and get as far as the welcome screen.
Additionally, using Last Known Good Configuration causes my computer to shut off and reboot BEFORE the welcome screen....
Any ideas?

This may help.
ReInstalling WindowsXP
http://www.onecomputerguy.com/windowsxp_tips.htm
If you need to reinstall WindowsXP and want to keep all your current installed applications and settings:
1. Start WindowsXP
2. Go to the location of your source files
3. Run WINNT32 /unattend
For example, D:\I386\winnt32 /unattend ( copy & paste this command into the RUN box, then press ENTER ) Your computer will do the rest.
Or,
Start > All Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt.
Copy & paste > D:\I386\winnt32 /unattend
Press Enter.
If you have i386 on your drive, you can replace D: ( if D: is your cd drive ) with the location of it.

No that won't help, try this way.

Boot off of a clean Windows XP cd ( your bios has to be set to boot from cd rom 1st ) choose Install ( Not > To Repair a Windows XP installation using Recovery Console, press R ) at the first prompt.
It will then search for a previous copy of windows.
When it finds your copy, it will stop at the next prompt and ask if you want to do a repair. Hit R at this screen.
If it does'nt mention a repair > DO NOT continue.
It will then copy a lot of files and appear to be doing a reinstall ( But its not. All your programs and data are safe, all you will lose, are your windows updates )
This will allow you to add accounts to the system that will be administrator accounts, it will also fix most problems in XP.
You will have to reactivate after the repair, but dont worry it will reactivate cleanly. This should fix your problems.

Hey guy thanks again, but still nothing.
BIOS doesn't recognize my CD for some reason, and I have set it to check both floppy and CD. Floppy works, don't know whats up with the CD. It may be because I only have the XP update CD...
But that's not this issue, is there any other way do this? Maybe with a floppy? I have a boot disk for XP, though it shows up as Millenium when I put in...strange...
And again, I CANNOT access Windows. I can go as far as the welcome screen but no further.

Also, pressing f8 on startup allows me to access windows some other ways, somehow I bypassed the welcome screen with one option and viewed safe mode for a second. But as soon as the mouse appeared my computer restarted itself.

I'm starting to think this is virus related.
As a last resort, I can format, but I have very important documents and emails on my hard drive that I need to recover first.

Thanks again guys, I really appreciate the responses, if I get through this, I'll owe everybody so much.

To do that safely, you need to slave it to another comp.

Yea, but still, that's a last resort. I can do that if need be, but I would much prefer to be able to access windows, at least once the normal way to get the files on a cd or something.

And by the way, won't I need to login, even if I make it a slave?

Thanks again

Windows XP Professional Utility: Setup Disks for Floppy Boot Install

The Windows XP startup disk allows computers without a bootable CD-ROM to perform a new installation of the operating system. The Windows XP startup disk will automatically load the correct drivers to gain access to the CD-ROM drive and start a new installation of Setup.

I was getting the boot disk info.

"And by the way, won't I need to login, even if I make it a slave?"

No, once it is slave, it is available for copy & pasting all your stuff onto the master HD or burning to CD.

If you have a virus/trojan/spyfiles, once it is on another comp, that comp can do a complete cleanup on your drive & you can safely recover your files, free of corruption.

Going to bed now.

Ok, thanks man. I really owe you if that works out for me. I'm at work now, so I'll give it a shot when I get home. Now what kind of software do I need for this, and can I do this via networking, or do I have to hard wire it....?
Thanks again...

Best way is Slave it to another HD/comp ( no need to bolt it in, just cable it & leave it outside the case ) & copy your stuff onto the other HD.
You may have a choice of jumper settings on the master HD, such as master with slave or ms.

Now change the jumper & put it in your comp & either repair or format, if you want to get the HD clean see below.
Make sure your XP cd is OK 1st.

Ok, so here's an update. I've successfully reinstalled windows via the link Johnw sent me, but the same problem occus. Doesn't look like my computer restarts automatically anymore, but I still have no user names listed in the welcome screen, including safe mode. and it somehow assigned me a password when I press ctrl+alt+del twice and can't long in the old/that way.

If this was a virus/trojan I want to avoid hooking it up to another pc wired at least.

How do I slave it over my network?

Thanks... for the tenth time

Have never done any networking, always hooked infected drives onto another comp.
