I updated and ran Spybot and Adaware before bed last night, woke up this morning, deleted what it found, re-booted and it won't let me login. I get to the login screen and when I type in my password and hit enter it says "loading your settings", flashes a one second view of my desktop picture and immediately jumps back to the login screen and says "logging off". I have tried booting in safe mode, logging in as the administartor with the same results. I also tried logging in to the last known good configuration of windows with no luck either. I have been on several different message boards trying to find solutions, but other peoples problems and fixes are either a little diferent or the fix suggestions don't work. I bought the laptop used and have no XP cd for it. I have an XP cd for another desktop machine though, but wanted some expert advice before taking any further steps. As I am saving money for my wedding, I cannot afford to scrap my laptop right now... Any information you could provide would be greatly apreciated!

Thanks in advance,

Ibstarc

You should be able to use the XP CD for the desktop to reinstall Windows, but you will need the product key for your laptop. Check the laptop for a sticker.

Thanks for the post. I tried to reinstall windows from the cd and now it is telling me:
Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
<Windows root>\system32\hal.dll.
Please re-install a copy of the above file.

How did you reinstall? Did you select the option to Install and then format?

Boot to the CD again, select Install, but then select the option to Repair.

Just so you know, if you selected the format option, then the reinstall your data has been deleted.

Life's more painless for the brainless.

I'm prety sure I steered away from the format option. Right now I am trying to use the Bootcfg utility in the Recovery Console to correct the Boot.ini file: It seems to be actually installing a new copy of XP on my machine now... fingers crossed!

Oh my gosh, I have THE EXACT SAME PROBLEM!
And it happened after I updated/ran Spybot and Adware.
Can I ask what you did to solve the problem? I really don't wanna have to reinstall.

Many thanks,

I too, had the EXACT SAME PROBLEM. I have XP Home Edition. I did update and run Spybot and Adaware on July 1. Also, I did download all MS XP updates in the last week of June. I WANT TO THANK JenniferSUMN and Rayburn for their responses, and for IbstarC for asking the question. I used the Reinstallation CD under Repair, it took 35 minutes, and WORKED FINE. The problem seems to be that something changes the StartUp Login Prompt - i.e., you have to Login. I never Logged In before, and I think it picked my login name from my saved email username. Thanks to Computing.net for the site. Cheers, Cott

A few things I forgot to mention that might help out those very few with less computer knowledge than a 57 yo bachelor without young people to help them out. I don't even know how to download music off the internet.
When you startup (turn it on) with the problem, press the F2 "Boot Sequence" key. Follow the instructions on moving the "Onboard or USB CD-ROM Drive" sequence higher (lower number). That means that your computer will try to Boot from the CD first, before going to the Hard Drive. If you always Boot from the Hard Drive, you'll never beat the problem.
Secondly, after you finally get to Windows, you need to Disable the Windows Login Prompt. Click Start and Run, type Control "Userpasswords2" and press enter. Uncheck the box for "Users must enter a user name and password to enter this computer". Click Apply and Ok.
When I startup, I now get 2 boxes that provide useless information, I click Ok, and I'm in.
Cheers, Cott
