Cant loggon when connected to network

Microsoft Als windows xp professional

Specs: Windows XP
I am using win XP Pro Version 2002 with SP 3 on a desktop computer.
While I am connected to the network my computer does not give me the loggin prompt. I can see my loggin name but cannot get the prompt to come up. I unplugged the network cable, rebooted and was able to log on. Then I plugged the cable back into the network card and am able to connect to the internet.
Also, firefox and spyware blaster only work after I bring it up if I have Task Manager open and click on it after I do each individual thing. In other words, I open firefox, click on Task Manager, go to mail, click on Task Manager, enter my name, click on Task Manager, etc. I dont have a problem with IE or word.
Do you know the fix?
Thank you
