cant log on to XP like other post

i was on my computer (XP) and it froze. when i reset the computer it takes a few hours on the "Windows is setting up" screen. I left it on last night while i was sleeping and when i got up today i looked and it was on the log is screen. but now the problem is that there is no place for me to put my passwork to log in. my log in name is not there so i cant log in. i am now waiting to try to log into safe mode to see if that will work but does anyone have any help or is my computer screwed?
