Hi.. i'm so frustrated now.. i can't log on to my desktop comp. cuz' i was trying to transfer files from my desktop to my laptop by setting up networks. I think i set it up right on my comp n laptop and i named it the same names so they can communicate or so and at one point i thought i connected them.. but i didn't really know how to search for desktop files from laptop n it's just really confusing.. i probably don't make sense now, but first of my major problem is that i can't log into my desktop after setting up networks and restarting both laptop n desktop pc. can someone help me solve n log back into my desktop?? i know my password and it's correct, but it says this when i type in my password
"windows cannot log on because your profile cannot be loaded. check that you are connected to the network, or that your network is functioning correctly. if this problem persists, contacte your network administrator."
could someone please... please help me??
thank you.

First , try booting into safe mode (F8 at startup) , then select from the menu , "Last Known Good..." , then restart.
If that doesn't work, then assuming you didn't set a password for the admin account ( if you did , then use the pwd) ... boot into safe mode , choose Adminitrator account ,leave password blank , press enter.
Follow the directions in the link below to use System Restore to restore your pc to a time prior to the network changes.http://www.updatexp.com/use-system-restore.html

I guess you re the Administartor for both PCs.
1.If not create identicalAdmin name & Password in both PCs.
2.In the Desktop PC create a New Folder and Rename it as SHARE (or anything u like).
3. Move all files you want to transfer to Laptop into this Folder you've named SHARE.
4.RIGHT- click Share>Sharing and Security...
5.Scroll down to Network Sharing and security section
6.Click and check mark the [] Share this folder on the network.
Now if you have networked correctly , you must be able to Click and Copy or drag and drop to Laptop's HDD.
Hope the outline is clear or ask for clarification

Well on a second reading of the message from saneobsessed after I read Rocketmech's post I realized I got it wrong:-(
what Saneobsessed refers to 'desktop' above is in reality his 'Desktop PC' and not the GUI-Desktop!!!! Just ignore Response #2.M

thanks for the steps for file transfer.
but can someone help me on how log on to my desktop again? i've tried safe modes n all, but i still can't log on... it looks like it's going to, but it gives me that stupid message again? should i my laptop's network be on or?? i dunno... i'm so stressing.
thanks

Next step seems to me to be Repair Install
Read the following carefully and if you want to proced use the steps below.A Repair Install will replace the system files with the files on the XP CD used for the Repair Install. It will leave your applications and settings intact, but Windows updates will need to be reapplied.
A Repair Install will replace files altered by adware and malware, but will not fix an adware, malware problem.
If the option to Repair Install is NOT available and you continue with the install; you will delete your Windows & Documents and Settings folders. All Applications that place keys in the registry will need to be re-installed.
1. Boot the computer using the XP CD. You may need to change the boot order in the system BIOS so the CD boots before the hard drive. Check your system documentation for steps to access the BIOS and change the boot order.
2. When you see the "Welcome To Setup" screen, you will see the options below
This portion of the Setup program prepares Microsoft
Windows XP to run on your computer:To setup Windows XP now, press ENTER.
To repair a Windows XP installation using Recovery Console, press R.
To quit Setup without installing Windows XP, press F3.
3. Press Enter to start the Windows Setup.
To Repair Install, press ENTER
do not choose "To repair a Windows XP installation using the Recovery Console, press R", (you Do Not want to load Recovery Console). I repeat, do not choose "To repair a Windows XP installation using the Recovery Console, press R".
4. Accept the License Agreement and Windows will search for existing Windows installations.
5. Select the XP installation you want to repair from the list and press R to start the repair.
If Repair not availabe you must be prepared for Reinstall.
In that case Repartition [Delete (D) and Create (C) partition]if you like and Reformat>Setup Windows [ Highlight the desired partition >[ENTER] ..>Affirm That wil give an option to chhose the type of File System FAT32 or NTFS > once chosen Copy ing files .........Reboot in 15 seconds Do not press key to Reboot from CD > complete Install to Windows > Admin Password create or Not to create stage...> Desktop , I mean GUI with Taskbar Start button Icons:-)

i put in a recovery cd, but it shows paragrahps like:
microsoft ramdrive version 3.06 virtual diskd:
etc.atapi ide cdrom device friver ver. v 1.23a
2 drivers detected
unit 1, master, irq 15, i/o address 0x0170
unit 2, slave, irq 15, i/o address 0x0170mode prepare code page funtion completed
mode select code page funtion completed
mscex version 2.5
etc.A:\>
that's what's showing.... just wondering how would i go about to reboot the disk first before harddrive?

Since your Aunthentic Bootable Windows XP CD with proper Product Key is not able to see your HDD, I am a bit confused/concerned now about the health of your Hard Disk Drive (HDD) or boot order
You need to give us the EXACT Make and Model of your Compaq Desktop Computer (shown often on its Tower)and also similar information aboutyour Notebook PC. This will avoid any confusion and you should refer them by their make and model so the readers can really comprehend the exact situation and often get the factory hardware Profiles of the PCs involved.
Later you must also give details of the hardware involved in the network creation like the Modem between the Computer and the ISP and the type of ISP [Dial-Up vs Cable Vs DSL]the Network Interface Card (NIC =LAN Card Local Area Network Card =Network Adapter)whether it is a Wireless type or Wired type , the Network device like Hub, Switch or Router that connects the two PCs for creating your Home Network and the Cables used [USB vs Straight-through Ethernet Cable (CAT5 or CAT6) Vs Cross_Over cable.]
For now to verify the boot Order you need to access the BIOS Setup in your Compaq Desktop PC.
If your Problem is not able to boot from a Legitimate Bootable Operating System CD, you need to make sure that CD-ROM is the First Boot Device in the BIOS Setup. For that you need to open BIOS Setup screen using appropraite key during POWER ON SELF TEST.
Without knowing the Exact Make and Model of a PC or Motherboard, it is hard to suggest the exact key to press; based on probability, for most Compaq Presarios models it is F-10.
Soon after you turn on the ATX Power the computer screen shows the light flickering first on top Left corner and then on the RIGHT and back on Left before COMPAQ Logo appears.Just before the Logo you start tapping the F-10 Key to make the BIOS Setup screen to open.
On the Menu you might see BOOT. In that case you select BOOT using Horizontal Left Arrow or Right Arrow key to Navigate to the Boot menu and ENTER key to open the menu for submenu and up down key or Tab key to get to the item to choose. In some later models I have seen the Boot Order under "Storage. in that case try STORAGE menu to access Boot Order.
Make CD-ROM "First" by pushing it up the "list" using the Left Horizontal key.
Accept the Settings change by F-10 >Save Changes and Exit [ENTER]>F-10 for YES
If the Bootable WinXP CD still cannot find the HDD in the Compaq ..... .... Desktop PC, there is hardware problem to HDD. At this time we may consider other diagnostic options
