omg please help... i am also getting the message "we could not sign you in to msn messenger. it appears you are behind a firewall that does not allow a direct connection to the internet. we tried to sign you in through an HTTP proxy, but your internet explorer settings are either missing or incorrect. to adjust your IE proxy settings, click the IE Tools menu, click internet options, click the connections tab, and then click LAN settings"......... i have no idea wat this means. i am using norton anti virus..but even if i close it down it still says the above message when i try to log in to msn messenger!! please some1 help me... im on windows xp by the way

Right click on "My Network Places" and right click on your internet connection in there. Go to properties (when you right click). Go to the ADVANCED tab and look in there. It should read "Internet connection Firewall". Make sure this box is not checked, and if it is, uncheck it and click OK. It will ask you if you are sure, but trust me, this firewall XP supplies is crap.
Let me know if this helps.
You can email me at jmiller at germain.lausd.net

You should be able to set your internet options under your tools/options/ when your in I.E. to allow passive firewall which will allow you to go on messenger. But since you have Nortons i would suggest turning off the XP firewall altogether as it's redundant and not really doing anything as long as norton's is running. You should be able to lower your internet permissions under your nortons options as well to allow more flexiblity to use messenger / access web sites etc.. although i believe the default shold allow you to already. It is possible that MSN messenger is having problems and your unable to log on due to that although unlikely if it's a persistant problem. let me know how you make out. cheers

thanks so much for replying! Joe, i have already tried the solution u suggested, but it was unchecked in the first place and didn't make any difference. Calvin, this problem im having has only started today. msn messenger was working fine since last night. i tried reducing my internet persmissions on internet explorer but still that didnt make a difference. i am not too sure how to do it on norton antivirus though... i hope this is a temporary problem that MSN is having but please let me know if u have any more suggestions. thanks.

Yeah a friend of mine is having the same problem now & when i read your problem shes also on Aol, so i think its a problem on their part.

i have just this moment found this web page
http://edition.cnn.com/2003/TECH/internet/09/02/msn.outage/index.html
i guess thats why its happening.... but im also a bit skeptical because i tried signing in to msn from my other computer which uses a different dial up service, and is on windows 98, but it manages to sign in to msn, hotmail, and all other msn websites just fine...

I'm on XP, have AOL & Norton, and since September 2nd, haven't been able to login to MSN. Is this perhaps a problem with MSN?

thank god im not the only one with this problem!
Im on windows 2000 and windows 98,AOL user, have norton 2003 on 98 and I have tried everything from deleting aol and making a new account with another isp to formatting a drive and re-installing windows 2000 and msn messenger >. this problem has only just occured for me and its REALY inconvenient if anyone can help I would be very greatfull.
my temporary e-mail while msn is down is jokerjp@mail.com
