I am a retired senior, so excuse if this question reflects my extreme lack of computer savvy. I searched the forums but couldn't locate the answer.

I downloaded the Windows XP SP2 file, after which Windows did a verification of the file and showed the downlaoad was successful.

I started installing SP2 when I realized, from the document I was reading, (printed from the Windows Update website) that my hard drive would not have sufficient space.

I then cancelled the installation, which had already gone through the preliminary installation initialization step and the 3rd-party driver list and was in the process of taking the inventory of my system.

My intention is to re-download and install SP2 at a later date, as I wish to first create some more room to complete my family estate plans. To do this I require some more room on my hard drive and would like to delete the downloaded Windows SP2 file, which took up 800MB.

However, I can't find where the SP2 file is my computer and need advice as to how to locate it. I know the size is 800MB, as my hard drive free space decreased by 799MB after the download and I had no other activity before or after the download.

Please help.

Windows XP Service Pack 2: XP SP2
File Size : 272MB
File Name : WindowsXP-KB835935-SP2-ENU.exe

This is what most likely you have downloaded ... How u only consumed 800 MB of space is a riddle ...

however it could be temporary files that were created during the install of service pack 2...

1- First of all go to Start>Programs>Accessories>System Tools>Disk Cleanup ... run it and select all the option to cleanup your disk that has windows on it ...

2- Open "My COmputer" and click on "Search" Button that is on the top ...

- Click on "All files and folders"
- search for "WindowsXP-KB835935-SP2-ENU.exe"
- delete it if u find it...

3- If the above doesnt work and u cant find the file ... then ...

Open "My COmputer" and click on "Search" Button that is on the top ...

- Click on "All files and folders"
- Click on "What size it it?"
- Select "Specify Size (in KB)
- Select "At Least"
- enter 200000
- press enter ...

it will search all the files that are more than 200 MB in size ... try recognizing the file and delete it ... DO NOT DELETE ANY NEEDED FILES BY MISTAKE ... as they wont go to recycle bin where u can recover them ... they are too big for recycle bin so that are doomed right there and then ...

I hope it helps :)

To know exactly where you are extracting and installing the service pack 2.

Note( you should look for the time when every file or folder was created when u search, I know for sure it creates a folder called I386 during extraction)

I ordered the sp2 on cd and it came in 3 days even though it said in 4 to 6 weeks, so I would order it to have it on hand, it will make it easier for next time you may have to reinstall sometime.

Thanks very much for the quick and useful replies for my call for help. You guys are always great and that's what makes Computing.Net so special.

Farrukh, I tried the Disk Cleanup and searches but didn't find the SP2 file. However, I went searching manually and located at C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\Download.
a folder named "6ca7b3a8efd5a9b6f87fff395a2eb989" and a file named "34d822e0c61e0d8067f37ec0ed66a15343e1a58f".
The file is only 38 KB but when I checked the folder the properties showed a size of 490 MB (514,285,612 bytes)and size on disk of 510 MB (535,379,968 bytes) and a total of 2,510 files in 73 folders. The time and date also corresponds to the time around when I tried the SP2 installation, i.e. early morning of September 6, 2004.

In one of the many folders is one called "update", within which I found a eula text document which read in part "SUPPLEMENTAL END USER LICENSE AGREEMENT FOR
MICROSOFT SOFTWARE

MICROSOFT WINDOWS XP SERVICE PACK 2

PLEASE READ THIS SUPPLEMENTAL END-USER
LICENSE AGREEMENT ("SUPPLEMENTAL EULA")
CAREFULLY. BY INSTALLING OR USING THE

1. GENERAL ......................

Obviously I can't show everything that is in the main "6ca7b3a8efd5a9b6f87fff395a2eb989" folder but I would have liked to attach a screen shot of part of the contents but don't know how. Some of the folders are named "asma", "backup", "ip", "lang", "new", "root" and "update" and are all dated September 6, 2004. The numerous individual files have a lot of .dll application extensions, many HTML documents, XDR files with names starting in xmlp and xp.

Anyway, please let me know if it is safe to delete this folder, or I need to send any more details to help me settle the matter.

Thanks again
George
