I have formated and installed win xp pro many times with no problem
but i added a new drive and by mistake made it slave as well as the other one..
so i changed it around (and i know i should have restarted but i forgot) and went straight into a format using the xp disc which stopped halve way through
now i cant get it formated or started with win xp disc or boot floppys
all i now get is a loud bleep every time i turn it on
as far as i know its not a memory problem as it was fine before i installed the dvd-rom i have also tried with the dvd-rom out
(btw its set to boot cd drive first and floppy last cant change this if i cant get in)
any one any answers

Have you tried to reset your cmos by removing your battery for a few minutes then reinstalling it ?

Hi billy, Bob, hello everyone,
"I added a new drive and by mistake made it slave as well as the other one..
so i changed it around (and i know i should have restarted but i forgot)"Are you saying you swapped them with the computer still running?

no i swapped it with the computer off and with it being wrong in the first place when i restarted it would have put it right (but i forgot to restart after i corrected it and went straight into a format)so imo it would still be wrong
btw when i disconnect all drives there is no bleep but i still cant get into the computer

will removing the cmos correct the cd\dvd drives bearing in mind i was halfway through a format (ie it was at the first bit looking for system files

and whenever i connect the drives all i get is a loud bleep than 5 secs then another bleep and on and on

Hi billy,
Connect just the hard drive and start the computer. What happens?

with only the hdd connected nothing happend only the computer starts but does not go anywhere but there is no pleep which indicates that the cd\dvd roms are at fault and i have checked the ide cables and the slave \master configurations

its set to boot from cd\dvd rom first will i take out the cmos battery and put it back in after a few minutes and see what happens then

anyone have any other ideas
if not im just going to take out the cmos battery and hope for the best

Hi billy,
I don't think the BIOS settings have anything to do with; "all i get is a loud bleep than 5 secs then another bleep".
Can you not get into the BIOS settings?

cant get into the bios settings but removed the cmos battery anyway
now it powers up to the black screen with the message that
CMOS CHECKSUM ERROR- DEFAULTS LOADED WARNING CPU HAS BEEN CHANGED PLEASE RE-ENTER CPU SETTINGS IN THE CMOS SETUP AND REMEMBER TO SAVE BEFORE QUITthen at the bottom of the screen i get
PRESS F1 TO CONTINUE OR DEL TO ENTER SETUP
but when i press these options nothing happens (either the keyboard is not responding or something else)

Hi billy,
That a rather common message on a lot of boards after resetting the CMOS. Normally one could just hit F1 and it would run at a lower CPU speed than it was set at before.
Do you have another keyboard you can try?

yes i will try this one the other computer is a 1.3 pentium 4 with 512memory and it was going fine for a year with xp so its not any setup problems...

ok i can get into bios set the comp to boot to cd first then rebooted to cd rom then a few seconds into the bit it looks for files up came this error
FILE SETUPDD.SYS COULD NOT BE LOADED THE ERROR CODE IS 4 SETUP CANNOT CONTINUE (btw i have loaded win xp from this cd many times without error)
so i then set it to boot from floppy and downloaded 6 floppy xp pro sp2 boot disks from the microsoft site on another computer and again it started but then stopped with thie error
FILE\BIOSINFO.INF COULD NOT BE LOADED
THE ERROR CODE IS 4096 PRESS ANY KEY TO EXIT

7 HOURS IM NOW AT THE STAGE OF LOOKING FOR A WINDOW TO THROW THE THING OUT ...
Any one know what to do next

Hi billy,
Nothing wrong with the CD as far as those errors are concerned. Those errors are due damaged or incompatable hardware.

i had spare rambus rd-ram and i gave it away..
ok im off to try it with the cd-rom i installed taken out and will post back

Hi Billy,
Remove all the PCI cards except for your video card.
Unplug any USB devices, or printers.

thanks for all your help mesich you are a hero
it was hardware it was a liteon cdrw (not the one i installed thats what threw me)
its formating just now greatttttttttttttttttt

Hi billy,
That's great, glad too hear it's working.
Better news, you don't have to find a window for the whole computer, only the bad cdrw. :-)
