OS: XP
CPU/Ram: XP 2600+ / 512 DDR 2700
Comment:

Ok here is my story: I am building a
computer for my girlfriend. The system is
the following:

AMD XP 2600+
MSI K7N2 Delta-L board
512 DDR 2700 - Generic I believe
64mb nVidia GeForce
52 max CD-Rom
52x Lite-On CD-RW
Sony 1.44 Floppy

Anyways, first off I build it with one MSI
board and I figure it was a bad board b/c it
would boot up then make all of these
errors such as floppy disk error (40). I
tried using XP's boot capabilities in my
CD-ROM and it only got so far before it
threw an error and just turned off.

Then I bought a brand new MSI board and
tried it again. This time I got a little
further. I got it to boot and go through the
BIOS. I turned off all the onboard devices.
Then everytime after that when I boot it
would change the processor speed and
what not. Now when I turn on the
computer I can't even get video anymore.
What could be causing this?

Is there any hardware incompatibility with
this MSI board? Why would I all of a
sudden have video and then not? I can't
get anything to come up. I am so lost and
confused. I have built MSI machines
before and have never had this problem.
2 other technicians were stumped. What
should I do? Please HELP!!!

also,
1)
make sure your mobo's FSB is set to proper speed for your CPU
2)
Flash the BIOS to latest
3)
Test CPU on another running system, if possible.

G'luck! -JP

Sounds like it's either overheating or you have an inadequate power supply. Did you installed the HSF yourself? Are you sure it's mounted properly? Did you use some sort or thermal material...pad or paste? Your PSU should be 300 watt minumum...

Could also be caused by bad RAM...is it one stick of 512 or 2x256? If it's 2 sticks, try using just one..if you still have probs, try the other...

jpers - I can't even get into the BIOS to set
the FSB anymore b/c it won't show video
which makes no sense. It also won't let
me clear the CMOS b/c I've tried it and I
still can't get video. I have tried 2 new
video cards also which pisses me off. It
worked before but all of sudden won't
show video ? ? ?

jam - What does HSF stand for? sorry I've
never heard that before. I have the board
mounted on the six stand-offs with
circular screws on the top. I used thermal
pads between the CPU and board. I have
a 350 watt power supply. I have one stick
of 512. I can't test with another stick b/c I
don't have one?

Gosh, what could be causing this
mess?? It worked fine for the first 4 boot
ups except it wouldn't boot a bootable
disk. Now I just can't get anything. It
powers on but doesn't show any video?

Does anyone know of any
imcompatibilites with this MSI board?
Could the problem possibly be a bad
CPU? It worked fine for a few boot-ups
besides the inability to install an OS but
now I don't get anything on the screen??

Any replies welcome!!! Thanks

Chad

I had (what seems like) exactly the same problem Chad, just bought this MSI K7N2 Delta-L board yesterday.
thought i'd messed up the VGA settings in the bios.
I had actually changed the FSB mode in the bios which caused the problem.
I then cleared the CMOS, and set the FSB Mode jumper on the motherboard (page 2-31 in the mobo's manual) back to safe mode and rebooted. All display etc came back as normal. Hope this helps...still can't install XP on it, keeps stopping at 'kernel debugger' screen.
Currently installing XP on my HD on a different PC, then will put my HD back and see if it runs ok with this mobo...not impressed so far with it, although I do like the diagnostic tool you get with it (D-Bracket 2).
let me know if you figure out the problem with XP installation.
cheers
Graeme
