Hello, my problem is that i am trying to install XP on a blank 40gb seagate HDD and basically i can't. The XP disk that i have is not the original it is a copy of my original disk, which came in handy as we have lost the original. Anyway the disk has worked several times on other computers, though only as an upgrade from previous OS, never on a blank HDD as the disk is not bootable. I want access to my CD-ROM drive via DOS at start up. I have formatted and partioned the new HDD and it is ready to install XP though i cannot install XP from my cd. Can anybody give me some detailed instructions in how to make a boot disk (floppy) with CD-ROM support for a BENQ 40-12-48 CD-RW drive. I have read other posts though they do not go into any detail only brush over it. I have been at this for a while and have tried settings in BIOS, tried to make bootable CD = Fail + many more
SYSTEM SPECS:
Shuttle - MN31N
Athlon - 2200+
256 DDR RAM - 1 Chip
40Gb Seagate Barracuda HDD - Blank
- Any help is appreciated

Go there and they have the setup disks (floppy) so you can install xp without booting from cd! Hope this makes your life easier!

Try bootdisk.com get a 98 startup disk...the downside to this is you may have to run FDISK again if you partitioned the drive using NTFS..

Use the xp setup disks, win98 boot disk won't work, Just loads DOS AND XP can't be installed from dos. Sorry dude

Of course it can, the only problem with a '98 disk would be that it wouldn't read NTFS volumes, which isn't a problem as you only need to access the cd drive.

go here http://www.seagate.com/support/disc/drivers/discwiz.html download save to desktop you will neeed two blank floppy disk this will format your HD for xp after go into your bios change the first boot from floppy to cd and reboot.

you can go ahead and try the 98 disks but i know for a fact they wont work unless you install 98 and upgrade to xp! AND Ray u obviuosly didnt read his post, he's using a burnt copy that won't boot from cd!

The process for installing Winxp is not the same as say Win98 or Me, You have to install from the Cd ROM and that means that you must change the primary boot device in Bio to CDROM first. Then save the changes. They system will automaticly restart and you should then get the option to boot from the CD. Once you have chossen that option windows will start the installation. This will include partitioning the Drive and formating. You will have the Chioce of FAT32 of NTFS as the File system. After that this completed there is very little for you to do except for some personal and regional setting options. On a P4 2gig Processor the whole install should take nolonger then 30 Min. You will have to add some drivers your self.
