I bought a new Maxtor HD 120MB and tried installing winXP on it....I kept getting a NTLDR is missing. So I talked to Maxtor and they told me to D/L the Win XP setup (6 discs) to help me with this. After I reformatted the drive and tried to install Win XP I got this message: The following value in the .sif file used by setup is corrupted or missing. Value 0 on the line in section [source disc files] with key "sp1.cab" Set-up cannot continue.
Can anyone please help me with this? I had Win98se on my old drive. This new drive will be my master drive (stand alone)and will be the only drive I use.

Need more info.. First off is this the first time your installing xp? Is this a bootleg cd or a real copy. You sure that the Hd your installing on is blank/ formatted and i doubt you need the 6 disks... Windows Xp should automatically start up when starting your computer and if not you change that in bios. Give more info.

Are you using the XP cd to partition and format the drive? Did you unplug your old drive? Assuming you can boot from the cd-rom you shouldn't need the 6 disk set. If you can get into the bios and set to boot from the cd-rom drive, then restart with XP cd in then partition and format the drive then install. Don't use the Maxtor software to format not needed if you can boot from cd-rom.

As i told someone else it can also be the cd-rom strangely. Same happened with me using my samsung driver while installing XP. Was missing files. I guess it bypassed those files?? so i just used my lite-on cd-rw instead and it installed perfectly

I agree with Roman on this. The NTLDR is a boot file and that message is usually associated with trying to install XP on an used HDD with a botched formatting and/or trying to use a different 9x boot disc to boot up. Go to bios and change first boot to CD and then reboot with Xp install disc in. this should allow you to reformat and then install.

You could also try installing win 98 and once it is installed then try installing winxp as a new instalation. I had the same prob. This was the only way I could do it.

Hi guys, This is a brand new HD and I had the Maxtor tech trying to help me out. He sent me to Bootdisk.com to get the 6 discs which actually worked out with the formatting and then I got another error mnessage and have to restart the process again....frustrating. The following value in the .sif file used by setup is corrupted or missing. The .sp1.cab I am going to try Antaries method beacuase when I put the XP CD in on my win98se HD it wants to install XP immediately. My WinXP is a real copy, and I also have tried both CDROMS for loading. Thanks alot for all your suggestions.
