I purchased Windows XP Professional, but can't install it. I want to install it onto a freshly formatted hard drive. I insert the CD (First boot in BIOS is CD) and reboot the computer. The computer boots up my current version of Windows, but not the Windows XP CD. I have tried to use the 6 startup disks on the internet, but the do little good.
This is very awkward since every other Windows version simply boots up and lets my run the setup from DOS and even access FDISK to repartition my hard drive. I remember installing this Windows on someone else's computer successfully this way..
In other words, HOW CAN I INSTALL WINDOWS XP?!?!?!

Boot you rcomputer into you current OS and then insert the WindowsXP CD. Run setu.exe from the root directory of the CD and you will be prompted for the action you want to take, one of which is to install WindowsXp

You should see the message press any key to boot to cd after you turn the computer on. If you dont press a key quickly it will pass the cd drive and boot to another bootable drive which is normally a harddrive. You must watch for press any key and you must press quickly!

Yes, in BIOS this is the boot order: CD-ROM, FLOPPY, HD.
I do not get any message at all concerning booting the system from the CD. There is a section, however, that says: ATAPI CD-ROM BOOT-Failure.At other computers, a WinXP startup screen should pop up during the boot process, but it doesn't for some reason

Change all boot devices in bios to cd rom only and change try other devices to no. That way it will only try to boot to cd rom and when it gets done it will stop and say insert disk and press a key.

I mean to say after it goes as far as it goes trying to boot and you dont see the screen saying when to press a key, let it go all they way and when it stops trying to boot then press a key with the cd in the drive and it should boot to the cd.

Hi Matt C
Just a thought...do you have more than one CDROM ?
Do you also have a CD Burner ?
Try the XP CD in the burner.Krystyna

I have set all 3 boot options to CD-ROM, but the system still ends up booting from my hard drive.
I would much rather install this on a clean hard drive, than replacing my current files.
I have tried this using my 2nd CD-ROM drive with the same results.

And you also cannot boot successfully from the floppy disks ?
Try resetting BIOS defaults.
Krystyna

Ok, in bios you should see 1st boot device- set to cd rom, 2cd boot device set to floppy, 3rd boot device set to floppy. Set try other boot devices to no. And try that. it cant boot to harddrive set that way! Try both cd and cd writer. For sometimes it will use the writer like krystna says.

Only reason I said set 2 and 3 to floppy is because if I know they are on floppy and you dont have a floppy in the drive it for sure will not boot to the floppy. If your xp cd is a legit cd you should be seeing the press any key message when it is hunting for boot devices. Strange!

Is this a full version of xp pro or a upgrade? I must admit I have not installed the upgrade but always installed the full version. I am not aware if the upgrade is bootable the same as the full version so I cant say.

I also think you have an upgradeable XP Cd otherwise try the second option once you have your computer boot up normallyy insert the cd if it does not run go to windows Explorer and double click it the go thru the setup process. Pete

try using a boot disk that has cd rom drivers, and run setup from the "dos" prompt.
if that doesnt like the others suggestions above, return the cd for a new one, becuase it doesnt work.

Have you checked your DVD/CD-ROM drives in Device Manager to see message. "This device is working properly". Or in fact are they enabled. Do other CD's work? I agree with alestram, it sounds like you may have a corrupt CD

My laptop had the same problem: any bootable cd of xp wouldnt work. what you could do though is make a windows 98 startup disk or restart your computer in DOS mode (F8 in the middle of a boot). Once in DOS, goto ur cd drive (e.g if it e:) and type in the following commands
e:
cd i386
winntthis should start a DOS based install of windows XP
good luck!

Put your Bios to CD-rom drive, Floppy and Hard drive (in that order). Telling your computer to boot from a single device more than once will do no good. If it didn't boot from the given device the first time, it's not going to boot from it the second or third time either. Did you say you have two CD drives? Figure out which CD drive you're placing the installation cd into and set that device as the cd rom device your bios should have the computer boot to. If your bios is told to use your second CD drive as the first boot device and you're putting the CD in the first CD drive, the computer won't notice the CD is in there because you would have told it to look for the CD in the other drive.
Place the installation cd into the CD drive and reboot. Most computers will show your OEM picture, graphics card bios info, then it'll show a line asking you to press any key to boot from the CD. It'll count to five and if you haven't pressed any key by then, it'll continue to the hard drive and load the windows kernel. the Kernel is loading when you see the microsoft label on a black background with a progress bar underneath. After the kernel loads, the kernel will load your Operating System.

first of all if your cdrom drive is aload of rubbish it wont boot i have an old machine with a 4x cdrom drive and it wont boot any cd's i have to use my 52x cdrw from my other machine on it to boot and install any operating system, id try getting a new cdrom or trying somebody elses cdrom drive might work, you can pick up a 52x cdrom drive for about £16 now brand new.
