I had Windows 98 SE on my PC and it had no probems, but when I got WinXP pro and tried to install it upgrading from Win98, the damn thing crashed when it was "Installing devices". Then i formatted my hard drive: same thing. I tried to install with the minimum hardware possible and still didn't work! Apparently it's not a BIOS problem 'cause i tried many configurations with no result... Please help anyone! I have the freakin' Windows XP pro and I can't use it!! :(

Are you booting XP from the CD, which is how I set up my XP pro CD. I altered my bios settings to boot from the CD and it worked fine.
Also, I found that XP is power hungry requires a minimum of 128mb ram to run smoothly.
Are you getting to the screenshot where you can test your Pc's compatibility with XP to see if you require different drivers?
What hardware are you running?

First of all, thanx for your help, Jeff. I also booted from the CD and Windows starts installing normally, but then, when it's installing devices it crashes. I have 320 Mb ram on my system, 64 + 256. I tried with the 256 socket only because i thought it could a compatibilty probem, but it still didn't work... The only thing that needs a different driver is my motorola V90 modem which i removed when i formatted my hardrive.
My last attempt was made only the my GeForce MX400, my AWARD motherboard (st693AVA/E or st693AVAMA/E, i'm not sure), a 256 mb ram socket, my 20 GB hard drive and my cd-rom player (52*, from CREATIVE) and it crashed it exactly in the same place... at 34 minutes from end.

It might not be it but I installed win XP Pro on a comp with a creative 48 speed CD Rom and it crashed at about the same place.
It took me three goes before it past the piont.

When you say it crashed, what exactly happened? If it just hangs at a reboot, you can manually turn it off and then restart and the installation will proceed where it left off.

You don't have USB mouse attached to a hub do you?
This crashed mine at the point where it got to 34 mins remaining. swapping it out for a PS2 mouse during setup fixed the problem

The Ribon Cable from you Hard Disk to the Motherboard may need changing, you might have the 40 Pin/40 Ribon, what you need is the 40 Pin/80 Ribon I think its something to do with the transfer of data in XP.
Worked for me.

Hi again,
Wonder if you have fixed the problem.
Could it I wonder be a problem with the CD?
The slightest speck of dirt can sometimes cause a similar problem, have you tried using a CD cleaner?
Could the CD be damaged?
Do you have another computer you can try it on to see if you still have the same problem?Good luck anyway...

hi there desperate one.
ive had xp now for 2 weeks and had the same problem trying to get it to install. tried for hours and then checked plug and play and it booted from the disk. so simple but so hard to figure!!!
good luck
wojo

I had trouble installing a couple versions of windows and it turned out that the CD Rom (50X) was spinning too fast and wasn't reading realiably. Used one with a slower speed and no problem. Something to think about...

I had same problem what you seems to have!! I changed my GeForce 2 MX-400 to old Intel 740 and then installation work fine!! After installation I change GF back and I donīt any problems anymore!!!

I have the same problem. I will try checking my hard drive ribbon, since I have tried countless permutations of hardware component removal. I have also messed with the BIOS settings and considered flashing the BIOS.

I have this exact problem with a Visiontek Geforce2 MX400. In all configurations with any boot into XP setup (through the win98 desktop, or boot straight from XP cd), XP initial setup hangs every time.
I've found 2 independent websites that have suggested this problem is due to the vga bios. Those sites are www.abit-usa.com regarding their own geforce card, and microsoft's help forum.
I've subb'ed a Radeon 32MB DDR video card in my system, and the XP setup ran flawlessly! Subsequent emails to Visiontek for support have gone unanswered. Either they don't have any way to update their card's bios, or they don't care. Either way, I'm done with Visiontek. I just bought this card and there's no support!
I'll never buy Visiontek products ever again. Their promise of returning email correspondence in 24hrs is bull--2 emails, and I've waited over 4 days and still counting. There are other nvidia video card manufacturers that I can spend time with. :)
