Can't install updates or defrag on fresh install of XP
I was having problems where XP would blank screen me whenever I restarted it ( http://www.sharkyforums.com/showthr...threadid=197980) so I tried to re-install it...about fifty times....really. The re-install kept freezing up on me in various places so I took out my hard drive took it to a friend's house and stuck it in their XP computer as a slave and used it to reformat the drive. Then I put it back in my computer and successfully installed XP...I think. First thing IT did is blank screen me on it's final install restart. Rebooted and we were OK. First thing I did is get on line and try to install the updates. Now it keeps freezing on me during the installation of the updates. I get a couple on there and then it seizes and I have to hit reset and start over. I try to defrag and keep getting this message:"Defragmentation of (C: ) has been aborted due to inconsistencies that were detected in the file system. Please run CHKDSK or SCANDISK on (C: ) to repair these inconsistencies, then run disk defragmenter again."
I ran CHKDSK and SCANDISK and nothing came up. After freezing and reseting I have gotten the blank screen treatment a couple of times but usually it comes up OK. I've checked out my BIOS, even tried setting it at "fail safe defaults" and I don't see anything that jumps out as a problem but it's not like I would really know. There is NOTHING on this drive yet except XP and what of the updates I've managed to get. What the hell's goin' on here?

Get yourself a factory-grade wiper, names escape me, i think MAXTOR do one, but there are loads out there free of charge. Any of these will revert your hard drive to the way it was when it left the factory. The only sure way!

Try this. Put your O.S. CD into your CDROM. click start/run/type: sfc /scannow. If that doesn't work then you have some Hardware problems, RAM, Mobo, HDD, Video card, etc.
