Dear Group:
I have a new Compaq SA4000T with a 160GB HD. I went to Microsoft and downloaded the SP2 pack. The pack starts to update fine. But when it gets to the "Creating system restore point" step the install fails.
Then I get an error message that says "Service Pack 2 Setup Error - Unable to read from or write to the database"
Does anyone have a clue about what to do?
Thanks a bunch!
wayne

You have a brand new computer. Does it have all the previous updates? My understanding is that this version of SP2 requires the previous updates to install.

I found this posted on a forum but I would check with them to make sure.
Anyone with a HP/Compaq product they say update your sound, graphics software before installing XP SP2.

Dear lurkswithin:
I updated everything. Then I went to the Windows update website and tried update to SP2 and it finishes the "initialization" step but then the "installation" step failed again. And it failed at exactly the same point.
I really do appreciate your help. Do you have any other suggestions?
Thanks kindly!!
wayne

I myself have not installed SP2. Am waiting a little while longer. The other issue that comes to mind that could be a cause of the problem that you are having is that M$ is having problems on their site or that you have either an extremely corrupted windows file system, which is being detected by M$ and is failing the install. Two things that i would recomend that you do.
1) google for and download a registery cleaner such as "regscrubxp" (free) run it and let it fix all the bad file paths that build up on everyones system. Simple to use.
2) After that use the XP or XP pro install disc (not a restore disc) and do a rebuild of your windows file system. To do this go to start, then run and type "sfc /scannow" (without the "" and notice the space) and insert the xp disc in your drive and hit enter. This is a "system file checker" and will rebuild all your protected windows files without hurting any of your personal files. Please post back and let me know if that works.
