Can't install programs in XP pro

I'm having problems installing software in XP pro. I can't say exactly when it started, but I've been unable to install the latest Freedom Force Demo, the Java SDK, the Direct X SDK, and the Jedi Knight game, as well as any windows updates. When it says its preparing for install, after I choose my directories it just hangs saying preparing to install or some similar message. Thoughts anyone?

I'm logged in as a user with admin priveledges. I can install some software, but not others. It just seems to hang... when I kill it via task manager, almost always it comes back with a dialogue box that says "setup failed: remote procedure call failed" what remote procedure would it be calling, and what would I need to do to correct it, short of reinstalling windows?

I've been having the exact same problem with Windows XP Home. Sometimes a 2-3 MB program hangs on installation. One thing I've found is that sometimes when I leave it for an hour or so and come back it has finished, which is ridiculous of course for such a small program. What is also frustrating is that I'm getting the same problem when I use Windows Update, which makes it difficult to keep Windows XP patched. In addition, I also seem to be getting a similar problem when I try to remove some programs through the add/remove feature. This is all highly annoying.
