Cant install or setup any programs!

Ihave been running xp since it came out.I just tried to install some programs and games and none of the will install.I hit setup or install and nothing.I tried installing from Hd and cd rom but nothing happens.I have tried various programs so its not the programs.Ihave run 3 different virus checks using 3 different up to date programs and have detected no viruses.I am at a loss here.I cant install anything.Thanks.
