Hi All, I'm brand new to the list. I'm trying to install Dragon Naturally Speaking 8, but am unable to get the mike to work. I tried the one that came with the package as well as one my wife uses. The microphone is plugged in properly, but it doesn't show up anywhere nor does it work during a test. My sound card and drivers (latest) are Realtek AC97.

Any help appreciated. I have a program here I want to use, but at this juncture it is useless.

Regards,

Jim

Is the Mic un-muted in Windows Volume Control.
If Microphone is not displayed in V.C., then click Options, then Properties, check mark the Mic box to get it displayed.

Mike is not muted. I Checked the box. Mike is shown under Recording Control panel, but nowhere else. Maybe I should plug the mike into the "line in" jack?? Still isn't working when I go to the sound recorder to run a test. Any more suggestions. Thanks a lot.

1.What is the Make and Model of the Mic that you bought bundled with the software Dragon Naturally Speaking 8 or separately?

2. Is this a stand-alone Microphone or Microphone + Headphone as part of a "Headset"?

3. If it is headset, are you able to hear sound as for example playing a .Wav or MIDI file

4. Are there any error symbols like ! against your Sound card, i.e. Realtek AC97 in Device Manager
ALWAYS Connect MIC to MIC in and headphone to SPKR Out.
Usual but NOT ALWAYS color assignment for the MIC in Port is Red /Pink and for Head phone Jack or external speaker is the Lime Green/Green Port.

Sound Card showing
Pink MIC- In and Green Speaker- Out Ports

For Chuck:

It doesn't show up in the Windows Volume
Conrol. All that's there are: Volume Control, Wave, SW Synth, CD Player & Line In.

The Recording Control Panel is where I went
to "test" the mike to see if it was working.
You find that under Start/Apps/Accessories/ Entertainment.

Should the Mike show up in the Windows Volume Control?

Thanks for your help.

For M:

1. The mike came with Dragon. All I can see on the mike is AC-100.

2. It's a mike and headset combo.

3. Yes, I can hear with it.

4. No error symbols.

On the Dragon Toolbar the mike symbol is grayed out. Also, for Dragon you have to turn on the mike via a keyboard shortcut. That doesn't work because as best as I can tell the darn thing isn't installed.

What must one do except plug it in? Pretty
darned complicated, eh (smile)?

Thanks for your help. I'm open to any ideas.

Jim

For Keltik:

Bingo! The mike shows up in the Windows Volume Control now.

However, it is still grayed out on the Dragon Toolbar and won't work.

Also, when I test it using Sound Recorder, it isn't working.

Do you know of any more ways to test it?

Thanks for your help.

Jim

If you have the same sound card in Playback and Recording boxes under Audio tab of Sounds and Audio Devices Properties window of Control Panel [ Start> Settings >Control Panel>Sounds and Audio Devices] and you still cannot record in Sound Recorder [showing wavy green line while Recording your own voice] and not able to hear the recorded voice on Replay, your Mic may be damaged.

Try a Different headset. If you really want a good one to use for the above Program or internet talk, my suggestion for one for reasonable price is a Plantronics Audio80 Stereo Headset.

Yep, same sound card.

I can hear, yes, but not record.

I may try my wife's mike again tomorrow and see what happens.

Thanks a bunch.

hi,
your welcome ,but chuck and peter suggested it earlier i clarified the path a little bit better.make sure the mic is in the right jack in the back...mic can be busted also..drivers may need to be replaced..you can run windows update to see if they have an updated driver for the sound card..when i ran update they had 1 for mine,so you never know they may hav 1 for you.try uninstalling dragon and see if the mic works with the program removed from the computer.might be a conflict with the program and the sound card.
try the mic see if it works.

As to the sound card drivers: I updated to the latest Realtek driver. I ran Windows Update and they didn't have any new drivers listed. Is there a different way to do it?

I'll try a different mike.

I'll un-install Daragon.

Then I'll report back.

Thanks to everyone!! It's sincerely appreciated.

Jim

kelticgent,

Jim is able to hear Windows' .Wav Audio files and therefore the Sound card drivers are OK and the Speaker side of the headset is working.

To rule out the remotest possibility of the MIC port of the Sound card not working, a trial of a known good headset with NOTHING else changed to the System may be in order.

I expect that to Work in Windows and that will prove a Defective Mic in n the 'bundled unnamed headset'.Jim can then buy a Good headset that suits his needs.

My experience with "Drivers Update" from "Windows Update".. Downloaders Beware!!!
Very often (4-5 occasions personally) the downloaded Sound or NIC drivers will make the Sound or LAN non-functional. Later it will be very hard to get rid of the installed drivers as they will keep on installing themselves even if you go and uninstall from Device Manager and then try to load the Vendor's original drivers!!! I have not yet had the problem with Video card drivers.

My suggestion for Driver Update:

For Updated drivers for Onboard(Integrated) devices, go to the System Board manufacturer's Support>Download site or to the PC Manufacturer's Support>download site.
