Hi,
First off, I'm no computer expert my any means, so please bear with me as I try to explain my conundrum.
I am trying to install my LG GSA-5163D onto my Dell Dimension 4550, but I'm getting the Code 10 error message (this device cannot start). I don't need any Windows Updates, and up until now my USB ports have worked just fine. I was able to install all of the software that came with the burner. I've tried uninstalling and disconnecting the burner several times, but to no avail.
I doubt the LG burner is defective because I just exchanged a BenQ burner for it; the BenQ wouldn't work either and I thought it might be messed up, but now I realize that the problem's on my end.
I hope I've provided all of the necessary information and that someone out there can help me!!!

Which IDE controller are you connecting it to and what other drives are present? Have you configured the master/slave jumper correctly?
In BIOS is autodetect IDE devices enabled?
I used to have a signature but it disappeared and I just couldn't be bothered writing another so please feel free to ingore this.

What SP level do you have? Do you have multiple hubs? Most usb problems suggest updating.

Best

does your system meet the stated minimum requirements for the burner? Need to be at least 800mhz cpu for most DVD Burners.

Did you try Microsoft's suggestions?

I have no idea how to determine how much CPU or RAM my computer has. I know that it has a 2.4-GHz Pentium 4 processor... Does this have anything to do with CPU?
As I mentioned in my initial post, I know very little about computers, so I have no idea what an IDE controller or master/slave jumpers are, much less how to manipulate them. I also have no clue how to get to BIOS.
I have SP2 and don't need any updates right now. I have other USB devices that work just fine (e.g. a scanner and a digital camera). My computer DETECTS the dvd burner when I connect the USB cable, but the bubble that pops up notifying me of the detection is often (but not always) followed by another bubble that says something like "There was a problem during installation. Your device may not be working properly."

And yes, Badboy, I actually did try Microsoft's suggestions, but they unfortunately weren't very helpful! I went through the troubleshooting wizard and tried to update my driver, but I got nowhere; I was told that a more suitable device couldn't be found (or something to that effect).

Sorry about my earlier suggestion. I didn't realize it was a USB external device. Thought it was an internal burner. Did the burner come with an installation disk? Otherwise visit the LG website to see if they provide drivers as a download.
I used to have a signature but it disappeared and I just couldn't be bothered writing another so please feel free to ingore this.

Could there be a problem with your motherboard drivers?
Dell has these at their website for your compuer:
