I just downgraded from Vista and everything went smoothly; except for installing the audio drivers. Whenever I install the drivers from the Realtek site or whenever XP finds the drivers itself, it crashes mid-install and instantly reboots. Error Reporting gives me the following message:
---
Problem caused by Windows (R) WDM driver for Realtek AC'97 (ALCXWDM.SYS)This problem was caused by Windows (R) WDM driver for Realtek AC'97 (ALCXWDM.SYS). This program was created by Realtek Semiconductor Corp.. Realtek Semiconductor Corp. does not currently have a solution for the problem that you reported.
---Another post on this site suggested looking up chip-specific drivers, found at http://www.viaarena.com/default.asp... This installed drivers with a different name (Vinyl AC'97) and did nothing to solve the problem.
Like the system specs say, it's an old hand-me-down mobo/processor and my friend has long since lost the drivers CD. I would greatly appreciate any help, I've scratched my head on this one as much as I can. Thank you!

Have you been to the ASUS Support Website, they have the correct drivers if you can find the Model Number on the MoBo.
FYI AC97 is a specification for Sound Chips, they are made by various manufacturers to this spec....
Therefore even though XP states Realtek I have had this problem of Driver Rejection because it recognised the manufacturer wrong.
