Try going to housecall.antivirus.com and doing a scan.

PS - If that doesn't work try installing in safe mode if it will let you.

the bugbear virus, to name one of probably many, attempts to stop services that are used by mcafee and norton. i would have computer scanned on line. disconnect from internet and then install antivirus software. update immediatly. or can get removal tool from mcafee website

run a check with STINGER first ...

p.s.: with only 128 MB ram i wouldn't touch either program ... look for something easy on your resources, i.e. AntiVir PE

... oh, this happened to me a few month ago ... cannot remember the name of the virus ... slightly puzzled after my 3rd attempt using AVG free this time (same result, executable vanished after the required reboot) i set the executable read-only. voila, problem solved. avg detected and removed the virus. no big deal.

My wild guess is that your XP may be running extremely low on resources. You only have 128MB.

Exactly. XP uses about 128MB off the back just for system resources. Up that RAM man.

TECHZAPORT OUT!!!

Ive just checked the System Requirements for both Norton and McAfee. The minimum is 128MB RAM. Just because your PC has 128MB RAM doesn't mean it will work as techzaport explained.

it might be a touch off your subject.
and i do use SAV corp..
But, i just installed AVG Free antivirus and IT found virii where SAV missed it.
point is.. AVG antivirus costs less on the ol' ram..
so maybe an avenue you may check out.
