can't hibernate or standby properly

When I try to put my laptop on standby, it will standby for only 5 sec. then come back on. Also, when I hibernate it one of two things happens: it either hibernates then immediately restarts, or, it will hibernate, but won't shut down. The screen will turn off, but the HDD, Power, and fan will stay on. The only thing I can do is hold down the power button until it turns off. Anyone have any ideas as to how to fix this?

It may be a conflicting BIOS setting preventing your computer from going into standby mode. Some network adapters have a wake-on-LAN mode or other always-on settings.
You may need to disable these in Device Manager or through the BIOS (usually accessed by pressing Del or F1 on system startup).
Try closing all applications and background processes, disabling your network connections and then putting your computer into standby mode.
