can't get past windows xp login screen on lap

October 20, 2010 at 07:43:22
Specs: Windows Vista
My daughter lent me her HP laptop which uses Windows XP - I used her login name and password all was well. But some months ago I got a message saying password is out of date need to renew. I did I remember thinking I wouldn't forget the password, but I have. I have tried every name I can think of but none seem to fit now. I have tried logging into administrator and entering no password but still it says it can't log me in and to check the login/domain are spelled correctly. I have run out of ideas - she says she gave me the XP disc as well but I can't find that.

I have tried F9 & F10 & F8 but nothing helps. I have a set of recovery discs which I made when I got the laptop some time ago. I made a set of recovery discs when I got the laptop from her because she hadn't. If I use these will it wipe everything off or will it still want me to use the password. If it is the old password then that is fine - I can remember that one but not the new one.

Please can you help me. I am not a computer expert. I am 68 years old but have used pc's at work before I retired, so please don't go too technical or you will lose me.

Thank you
