Can't Get Into Safe Mode! Please Help.

I've had some problems with a third drive with it showing a bunch of bad sectors. I wanted to go into safe mode to see if I could reformat the drive but I can't get into Safe Mode. I select F8 and it will bring up a screen where I can select Safe Mode but it just runs a string of data on a black screen and never gets into Safe Mode. I've let it sit for nearly an hour and it still won't. I sure hope somebody has an idea what I need to do. Much thanks in advance for your help.
This happens to me, but if I wait til the 3 keyboard lights have flashed on, and the string has stopped running, I can press ESC and it uaually loads into safe mode! No idea why it does it!
