so i dug up Scholastic's Comic Book Maker featuring Garfield. i'm determined to get this game runninng. the problem is: when i try to execute the game, i get the error message "This program requires at least 3MB of free virtual memory to run" with a "Director Player" headline. i tryed reinstalling a couple times, and one time or another i got a message saying "Can't change registry" during installation. I tried the compatability thing with the executable. Any idea of what i can do?

You do not post what environment the game was designed to run under (Windows 3.x, Win 95/98). Legacy Win applications just refuse to install under XP as they were planned for a DOS based environment while Win XP has NT kernel.
I suggest you download from Microsoft's site Virtual PC 2007 (it is free) and run your game inside the virtual machine that emulates the old system at your desktop.
To do so however you need a legal copy of the related operating system as you have to install that during or after the VPC setup (if you run Win XP Home ignore the warning about the required Pro edition, all works fine).
If you absolutely want to put at work your game this is the preferred road.

You need to install/run the game in "Compatibility Mode":
