Comment:

i am in desperate need to flash my bios inorder to rectify a memory issue
i boot into safe mode dos and when i try to run the flash utility ami818.exe i get an error message that is :-
dos/4g Protected mode Runtime Version 2.01a
copyright (@) tenberry software inc. 1996
chipset/flash part isnt available. the function will be invaild.

how can i bypass this protection

there are no jumpers on the mobo and nothing in the advanced bios setup that describes anything like this

mobo is a K7S5A (Elite Group)

i think this protection might be something to do with the firmware as mentioned on the ECS web page but it says to disable it in the advanced bios settings or jumpers on mobo

TIA

Make a boot floppy and put the flash utility on the floppy. You can't flash through safe mode. Make sure on your boot floppy nothing is in the Autoexec you don't want anything loading into memory when your flashing.

lo dogg out

Hey, you can also use a win95, win98, or winME regular boot disk. Just copy your bootdisk of choice to a blank disk, then add your flash utility and new flask file. After your computer boots to dos from boot disk, start your flash utility. I used a WinME Startup disk I made way back when just a few days ago and worked awesome. Good luck.

thanks for your input but im going nowhere fast
When i get into any kind of dos (XP`s startup dos), when i try to run the exe file to flash i get a general protection fault. when in ms dos i get the same error message as in my 1st posting

i have d/loaded a file called dr disk which is supposed to be for booting into the a:\

i have looked in the autoexec.bat and there is nothing there it just says `@ echo off cls`
There are also three more files in the floppy,
command.com
ibmbio.com
ibmdos.com (i am presuming this is ibm dos?)
if i remove the ibmdos.com it wont boot but if i leave it in i cant flash

is there a command line i can put in the autoexec.bat to run the ami818.exe before the other files have loaded ?

i hve a feeling that this protection is in the firmware????? im not sure what this is in relation to the mobo, but i have had this information flash up when errors have occured. Then i have to clear the cmos to get it to boot up again.

this is the error i get in MS dos again:-

dos/4g Protected mode Runtime Version 2.01a
copyright (@) tenberry software inc. 1996
chipset/flash part isnt available. the function will be invaild.

any ideas ?

Do you have to use any specific command line syntax to load your flash utility and specify the file containing your new BIOS??

What mobo are you flashing??
What utility/program are you using to flash??

oh boy

after looking in google for something similar i found im not alone with this problem so having found all the info to flash i set about doing so ..... big mistake
its completely knackered that pc

im pretty sure that there is no way back for it but if you can help please try

i had to run the exe and the rom in one line
this skipped through the protection
and when it flashed (not like the usual flash progress) it rebooted so i pressed to release the floppy and now when i turn it on
it just beeps and tries to read the empty a drive

is it f---ed ?

i read that if you make a mistake on the flash process it is f---ed so that is what i fear

over to you buddies

Put the new bios file and the flash utility onto a floppy disk and reboot your computer. MAKE SURE THE DISK IS EMTPY and just has those two files on it. When you get to the screen where you choose to start your flash utility , which should be OUTSIDE of windows, you shouldnt even be IN windows yet...it'll find the updated BIOS on the floppy disk and flash it for you, then it will reboot, you should eject the disk and should be fine.

zebedee, if the above post didnt work, do what I did. I had the exact same problem (the same motherboard - k7s5a). I tried flashing using the command line and my mobo bios got screwed up as it did for u. i took the mobo to my dealer and he replaced the bios chip. let me know if the previous post worked for u. If so i will again try to flash my bios ( dealer's not flashed my bios with the latest version :-( ). If not, wont take that risk again

1. MAKE BOOTABLE FLOPPY
2. PLACE AMINF331.exe AND 020112L.ROM ON FLOPPY
3. BOOT UP AND AT DOS PROMPT A: TYPE THIS...
aminf331.exe 020112l.rom
These are the latest prog and data from ECS website. IT WORKS...just did it myself

ok. I have the same problem. I can't install xp, 98, or 2000 bc of installation errors during the process. I want to flash the bios to correct the acpi (?) power incompatability and other possible problems. So, I made a bootable floppy with just command com, amin331.exe, and 020112lrom from ecs website. when I try to type in the command string amin331exe 020112lrom, I get a message that says "error 2 file does not exist". What does this mean?

thanks

It worked!

I loaded the bios flash utility on the boot disk as well as the .rom file.

a:/aminf331

and got the error code 2 message. I then ran

a:/aminf331 0110233S.ROM

and it worked!

I had to use a win9x bootable floppy.
***DOS 6.22 floppy did NOT work*****

Entered the following at a: prompt.
aminf332 020206l.rom

If you have the non-lan version, use 020206.rom
