Comment:

I recently downloaded the Diskeeper Lite defrag program. Runs great. Now, however, I can't find the original defrag program which came with XP.

Can anyone tell me what to look for in System 32?

The original defrag icon brings up Diskeeper Lite.

To go back to original uninstall diskeeper and then do a system file check.
Find your XP disk and then click on start/run and type in sfc /scannow. Note the space. This will repair all files back to original state.
This is the best repair option short of a reinstall.
Write it down. I use it all the time.

Stump:

Thanks for the tip, but my computer did not come with a CD. The backup/re-installation for XP is done with 'system recovery' from another part of the hard drive.

I'm guessing that, when I installed Diskeeper, it automatically deleted the original XP defrag program.

I was just hoping the old program still existed on the drive somewhere, should it ever be needed.

Thanks again, Solarian

i had diskeeper lite and when i uninstalled it,
the regular defrag was back, i didn't have to reinstall it.
diskeeper lite is almost identical to the one that comes with xp. (same software company)

To Stump: As luck would have it, I cleaned out all but the last system restore point while doing maintenance. By then, Diskeeper was already installed.

To OK: I'll keep what you said in mind. If for some reason the original defrag program doesn't re-appear, I can always install Diskeeper a second time. 8-)

and the defrag.exe program that comes with xp
is in c:\windows\system32\defrag.exe
you might have to show hidden and system files to see it.

When searching for your old defrag.exe...Keep in mind that "diskeeper" may have renamed it to "defrag.old" or "defragold.exe" or something to that effect. It's my understanding that uninstalling the program should make the original defrag program work again tho.
Hope this helps
James
