Comment:

I redid my computer about 2 weeks ago. Ever since I reinstalled XP Pro I have not been able to download anything from Microsoft.com.
This includes updates, direct x, verification software, or Sp 2 or Sp 3. All it brings up is cannot connect to http://www.download.microsoft.com or whatever. I have tried refreshing and everything. I was wondering if anyone had any idea. I have Avast Home edition and have been running it thinking it might be a virus or something. but nope no luck. Thanks in advance.

daveden123, first thing I'd do is look at the security settings in IE. M$ sets them to 'high' as default. Anything higher than 'med' blocks things. Might well be something else, but...
HTH.

I don't THINK updates are available for Service pack 1.
You need a minimum of SP2.

You need to download Sp2, install it, then try updates. Note SP3 has all of the SP2 updates.

I suggest you make an integrated copy of XP with SP2 or 3. Using Autostreamer or Nlite.

Before posting try google. Backup. Use anti virus software.

I seem to have the exact same problem. since
I reinstalled windows xp, I haven't been able
to download anything from Microsoft.com This
includes updates, sp2/3 and windows live messenger. all firewalls are off and
automatic updates are on. could it possibly
be from a home network firewall or
connection?

OK, the link says sp1 is not supported.

Go to http://www.softwarepatch.com/window...
to download sp2 & search on the same site if you want sp3.

Or use google to download the service packs from a non microsoft site.

Before posting try google. Backup. Use anti virus software.

It's a trojan. This tool whipped it out in under a minute, quick reboot and all set. This drove me mental for 2 days. RELIEF!!

This problem is on loads of forums so if it works for you please paste it somewhere else
