Have you tried to move it and then delete it? Or maybe instead of command prompt you should try from recovery console.

Seems a common problem with Xp, as i've had the same problem on occasion. ANOTHER Xp bug, ah Microsoft, how we love you. Do as Jim says.

look in your start-up folder and see what's there, also check registry HKLM\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\WINDOWS\CURRENTVERSION\RUN and see what is there. nine times out of ten the problem is in those two places. Just because you stopped a program, if it is in your run or startup folder it is if it's still running. You really don't need but the basics in the run. e.g. Norton, rundll.exe. anything else is not needed, even your printer, etc they will start up when needed. Same with the startup folder.

mykhull,

Just wanted to ask if you tried using Process Explorer to close the handle that Windows Explorer has on the file. I had the same problem you are having once, and it worked for me.

Give it a try if you haven't.

>> From my earlier post:

Try downloading the freeware app Process Explorer for WinNT/2K/XP.

Run Process Explorer and do a search by clicking the binoculars. Type the name of the file that you can't delete and hit Search. It will most likely show you one or more entries for the file. Click one of them, then hit Close.

Now notice in the bottom pane of the main window one of the items has been highlighted. Right click it and choose Close Handle. Now quickly go and try to delete your file. If it doesn't work, try searching again to find out if there is another program with an active handle to the file.
