Hi,
I downloaded a song that was recorded quite badly. So, when I decided to delete the file/song, I was NOT able to do so.
As soon as I highlight the song to delete, my CPU starts to peak out at 100%. Of course, everything is now slow.
Then a box pops up that says another program is using the song, therefore, I cannot delete it. No other program is using the song! So, I tried to restart.
Well, after I click the restart button, another box pops up saying that 'EXPLORER'is using the program. My Task Manager also shows that Explorer is using the song/file; even though it's not.
So, I have to wait for the darn box to close while the computer is 'shutting down' Explorer; even though it's NOT open.
Basically, I'm stuck with this song/file on my hard drive. I CANNOT delete it.
Can somebody please help me?
THANKS

thats because someone else is downloading the song from your shared folder. After they are done downloading it you will be able to delete it.

Thanks JAG, BUT......
I've already tried 'NOT SHARING WITH OTHER KAZAA' people. I've disabled that function, just to see if it would help. It did not.
Thanks, though.....

boot with a windows 98 boot disk. (this will load DOS)
once loaded, navigate to the file and delete it.
Reboot as usual.

Unfortunately, a lot of the files you download off of file sharing programs are riddled with viruses. If a virus happens to be attached to this .mp3 file, that may be a reason why you can't delete it (and explain why it's in use by the system). Check the file for viruses with Norton AntiVirus (best choice) or McAffee VirusScan (last resort). If you come up clean, it doesn't mean you're home free.
Check your services/processes tab (Ctrl+Alt+Del) for anything that looks weird or out of place ...

Thanks, CSCgal.....I came up clean scanning with NORTON.
But...you mentioned that I STILL might not be home free, so I should check the 'Task Manager/Process'. I checked it and have NO idea whatsoever to look for.
All seems to be 'processing' correctly. Meaning, whatever progs that are active, the CPU % is active; but active normally. I think that's good?
How would I be able to tell if this is a virus?
Thanks, CSCgal =)

CSCgal: I forgot. Respectfully, as I mentioned in the beginning of this post, when/if I highlight the song/file to prepare to do anything with it, my CPU % shoots up to 100%.
This slows EVERYTHING down badly; and sometimes to the point where the system freezes. I then have to press the restart button =(
THANK YOU.

I had a file that would not let me delete
it but I still got rid of it I draged it to the recycling bin and it went then I just emptied it.
Good Luck

Sometimes I have had this problem. Sometimes they have long file names and wont let you move or delete them. But if you use command prompt, even in XP, you can delete it using the del command.
Try that before anything to drastic. It works for me

check for a file called explorer.scr in taskmanager. If it's there you have to make sure to delete it. It's got to do with the benjamin worm virus. check with your norton scanner how to get rid of it.

Mic, Raccoon, Bert: Thanks for the help guys!
But =(.....I just tried to drag the song/file to the recycle bin and my darn CPU shot up to 100% again, and my system froze =(
I don't know how to delete the file in 'DOS' or using the Command Prompt.
I also scanned my system again and checked for 'explorer.scr' in the 'Task Manager'. My scan came up clean and I don't have the 'explorer.scr' in the Task Manager.
THANK YOU, GUYS

Go to www.winternals.com and download a demo of NTFSPRO This program will build a boot disk that will read NTFS partitions so you can delete the file in question.

An even easier way to fix your problem is to use a boot disk created by a UNIX or Linux machine. Boot your XP machine on one of these disks and you will be able to read an NTFS partition.

Thanks, Steve.
BUT.....Is there another option, besides using the NTFSPRO prog that you mentioned?
Respectfully, I don't want to install other stuff until ALL simple options have been taken.
HOWEVER, I am truly thankful for your help.
THANKS.

Ok, if you want to try doing it in dos here is approximatly what you should do
start/run
type cmd enter
type cd/ enter
type cd progra~1 enter
type cd kazaa enter
type cd myshar~1 enter
type del (first 6 letters of file name, no spaces then ~1) enterthat should do it, if not repost
Good Luck
