Name: Anthony
I am trying to delete a movie (not porn) that I downloaded that is corrupt. It is virus free, but when I try to delete it it says " cannot delete, this file being used by another process or person".
I tried to delete it in safe mode but did not work.
(FYI- I am using Win XP (home) & I am using 2002 norton anti-virus, dont know if that means anything)
Appreciate any HELP !!! ~Thanks!~

Wow, what a coincidence. I have exactly the same problem but with a photoshop .psd file. I came here to enter a message and found yours.
Any one answering this question can now help two lost souls.

ive had this problem before porn or not lol.what i had to do was reboot which stopped allactivity with that file then i was able to delete it.hope it helps.

Thanks good, there are more people having this problem.
From time to time i also have this problem.
I must restart my Computer in save mode and log in as Administrator (not a user with administrator rights) then i can delete the file(s) (no Porn Movies:-)(sorry about my bad english because i am froma Austria)

I appreciate the advice, I have tried the re-boot and still the problem persists...
Anymore ideas :-)
~Thanks~

Bring up the task manager (ctrl+shift+esc) and end task on explorer under the processes tab. Then Click File>new task and browse to the file and delete it from within the browse window. After that cancel out of the browse window and type explorer in the "Create New Task" window and hit enter.
Hope this helps,
Sandman

i also have had this problem, are you using any peer 2 peer, proggies? i.e kazaa, eDonkey, iMesh etc.? also have you got an always on internet connection?
if so disable the network card or simply unplug the network cable, delete the file then connect back up.
Hope that helps!
Andy

There's already solutions to delete problems if you search xp forum with delete problem etc. or try using google.
Okay, this is for XP users having difficulties handling incomplete avi files with explorer e.g. renaming, moving, deleting etc.
This can be fixed by clearing the value (Default) from the following registry tree
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\SystemFileAssociations\.avi\shellex\PropertyHandlerYou can do this by opening registry editor by selecting run... from the start menu and typing regedit.exe in the field and press enter. In regedit activate the my computer in the tree view and search SystemFileAssociations. When the key is found there browse for the key .avi and there shellex and there PropertyHandler. There you should see the value (Default) and by clicking it you can clear its value.
Or you can make .reg file with notepad named e.g "Disable explorer from processing .avi files.reg" that contains the following lines
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\SystemFileAssociations\.avi\shellex\PropertyHandler]
@=""if you for some reason you want to undo this later do other file named "Enable explorer to process .avi files.reg" containing lines
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\SystemFileAssociations\.avi\shellex\PropertyHandler]
@="{87D62D94-71B3-4b9a-9489-5FE6850DC73E}"Then you can run the .reg file to apply the changes into the Windows XP registry. This will prevent explorer from loading shmedia.dll that reserves the avi file when it tries to get its properties.

Here's some free tools to track problems
Regmon monitors windows registry activities and I used it to track the avi problem.
Handle can tell what resources are opened by processes and with it you can see what process has that file/folder opened that you can't delete.
Filemon can monitor what files are being accessed by processes.
TCPView can monitor network traffic.
You can get them all at
http://www.sysinternals.com/It seems that explorer.exe leaves some files opened and they can't be deleted without killing the process. It would be great to have fix or tool to close files left opened by explorer.

I just browsed sysinternals and found that there is also a tool called Process Explorer that has user interface unlike the command line tool Handle. With Process Explorer you can search the undeletable file/folder name and then close exlorer.exe's handle to it and after that you can delete that file/folder.

I've been called a lot of things in my life but I don't think genius has ever been one of them LOL
But really I'm glad I could help out,
Sandman

Sandman you r a star!!!!!!!! u don't know how much u've helped me atleast now i can sleep peacefully-----keep up the good work!!!
