Comment:

I transferred an outlook msg file after I added a bunch of email addresses to the file name as a dumb easy way to include them with the message. But now I can't do anything with the file. The name is too long, or includes too many @ symbols and such. It has no icon, right-clicking on it only gives open, print, open with, send to, but when clicking it opens Outlook and never appears. Highlighting and hitting delete does nothing. Dragging to trash does nothing.

It's in C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents (which is actually D:\MyDocs but that's the address that shows in explorer.) I know nothing about DOS really, but is there some way I can delete it via dos?

Or an easier way?

Thanks.

You may be able to delete it in safe mode. If you can find out about MSDOS you can delete it via there, not sure about MSDOS prompt though you may want to try it.

Start-Run type: Cmd and press Enter.
At the prompt you may need to change to the directory where the file's located.
Then type: attrib +r+a+s+h and the file name press enter.
You may as well delete the file while you're in that directory.
Type: Del file name then Enter

Found an easier way to delete the file
Locate the file in Windows Explorer,
Right click file and scroll to Properties.
Take all checks off the Attrib.

there are no properties listed when right-clicking. I tried file/properties when highlighted, but nothing in the dialogue at all.

Above I said it was actually d:\mydocs, but that was wrong.

CMD:

When I try to go to the folder I can only go to C:\Documents and Settings\John and no way to change the prompt to get to C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\

How do I do that? I don't even sign on in XP, just start up. No user accounts.

I need to get there to just to see what the file is called before deleting it.

Thanks.
