I work on computers all the time. I run into problems where I need to copy the contents of a drive to another computer (ie I physically remove the drive and attach it directly to my computer and copy/delete files.) I have noticed on several occasions that I cant delete certain files (in temporary internet files, index.dat, hp share to web, files that are over 125 characters in length, etc). I cant find file permission attributes for these files that would prevent me from eleting these files. I am running the drive from my computer so there arent any programs that are linking to any files on the drive. Can anyone shed some light on this?

Some files seem to be protected by XP (eg index.dat), but if u delete via a command prompt WITHOUT naming the file in question (esp dodgy avi files or very long named files) they can be deleted (most times !!)
This involves using the command del *.* (deleting everything in the folder), so u have to remove any files u need to save beforehand. Might work with *.file_extension.
