Hi

I think Norton is little better than having no anti-virus software but since you have it look here:

First off that's not exactly a virus. It's actually spyware. Second, NO antivirus software will remove that, and actually only one antispyware program out there that I know of can get rid of that one. Ad-Aware, Spy Sweeper, and even Spybot S&D can NOT do the job. Try PestPatrol (www.pestpatrol.com). That's the one I use all the time to remove that specific one from my customers machines. Basically I use Ad-Aware first to clean up the majority of the spyware, then I run Spy Sweeper to clean up left overs from that scan, and then I finally run Pest Patrol to get rid of the rest. You might also want to edit your HOSTS file and then read-only it quickly after the spyware scans so that you have less of a chance of reinfestation. The location of the hosts file is:

C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\Etc\Hosts
or
C:\Winnt\System32\Drivers\Etc\Hosts

All you have to do is the following to edit it.

Start -> Run -> type "notepad %windir%\system32\drivers\etc\hosts" -> press Enter

(do not put the quotation marks on the string)

What you are looking to do is simply remove all entries in the file except for:

127.0.0.1 localhost

Once that is completed you need to save the file and VERY QUICKLY navigate to the directory that contains the HOSTS file, right-click on the HOSTS file, choose Properties, and select the Read Only option so that it can't be modified again. Ameador,

If possible try this online virus scanner site for the Trojan.STARTPAGE virus:

http://housecall.trendmicro.com/

If not possible, you can download Sysclean Package (1.8MB) (it is a Virus scanner and will delete virus, worms) from this link below:

http://www.trendmicro.com/download/dcs.asp

YOU WANT THE one under this sentence...."If you are not a Trend Micro customer please download the following file."

Instructions are there but here it is:

Create a folder (ex: Sysclean)...extract the executable to the folder.

Download the latest Virus Pattern File from this link and place it (extract it to the same Sysclean Foler):

http://www.trendmicro.com/en/home/us/enterprise.htm

Once you have sysclean and the Virus Pattern File in the same folder....Double click sysclean to run it......

Remember to download a new virus pattern file in two or three days...it is usually updated daily......
