Working on a Gateway 500SE and in an attempt to defrag I get an error message that a Chkdsk had been previously started and must be completed prior to the defrag. When I attempt the Chkdsk I get the following error message (and have after several repeated attempts): 28642 segment file record unreadable. Deleted corrupt attribute list entry with type code 128 in file 29285. An unexpected error occurred. The scan then stops and a reboot is needed. Is the HDD "history?"

Run
chkdsk /r
That will check every sector on the hard drive for the ability to write and read.It will attempt to reassign any bad sectors to a good part of the drive. It takes a long time, so be patient. If you get more than a few bad sectors, trash the drive.
