Hi!
For backup (I'm about to reinstall WinXP) I wanted to copy all the content of my "My Documents" folder to another harddrive.
I selected all folders and used the copy and paste commands. Then I got an error message that just said "Can't copy file" (or something simular, my os is swedish). It doesn't give me any info on what file is causing the problem.
I copied the folders one by one instead until I found the folder that couldn't be copied. This didn't contain very important stuff so I decided to delete it instead. Then I got another error message saying that the name of the file/folder is to long and therefore it couldn't be deleted.
The name is "Boutique 1 (Dumble Overdrive Special Clean Channel)" (51 characters).
When I changed the name of the folder to a shorter one I was able to delete it.
Now my questions are:
1. Why did Windows accept the name in the first place (it's something I downloaded so I didn't name it myself)?
2. I thought the limit was 256 characters, am I wrong?
3. I have come across simular problems before when moving big amounts of data e.g. 1000 photos and all of a sudden you get an error message that windows can't copy or move the file but it doesn't say which file and then you got no control of what was copied and what not.
Is there any setting in Windows or another filemanagement app that would just skip the files that are causing problems and leave them in their orignal location so that I can see which the files are or perhaps print a logfile?
Thanks for your help!

The limit is 256 characters, but that's the whole address, like:
C:\Documents and Settings\Joe Bloggs\My Documents\My Pictures\Fluffy Bunny.jpg
You can force XP into using longer file names by dragging and dropping files and folders, so that they have names that are too long (I did this myself by copying my entire My Documents folder into a sub-folder within a sub-folder of My Documents), but running scandisk should find and fix the problem.
Quite often the 'can't move file or folder' message is caused by running out of memory. Copy fewer files at once, that's all.
cursum perficio
