can't copy files out of XP

I have an IBM Thinkpad R31 notebook here, sometimes connected with an Iomega USB hard disk to do backups for some Word doc's, Powerpoints, etc. When I try to select all of these files from "My Documents" in local HD and copy to that USB hard disk, it prompts out an error saying "Can't copy NTUSER.DAT: Access denied. Make sure it is not in use or write-protected". Then the copy process stops. What's wrong with it?
