so i backed up 4GB worth of images onto a DVDR. there weren't any burn errors as far as i can remember.
a few folders deep, when i try to copy some pictures, it won't let me. 64 characters in the full path.
from my dvdrom, it says "incorrect function".
from an external dvdrom, it gives me a cyclic redundancy error.
it's been partially successful in that it only copies half an image; the rest is just gray.
now, i have a dvd player that reads jpg files. it is able to display the image fine 100%. i wish there was a way to connect my dvd player as a dvdrom or something.
jfilerecovery was a bit more successful; the gray is now the rest of the image but distorted.
i'm running getdataback now.
can anyone help me out? thanks.

I have trouble following your post. To begin with how did you burn the DVD?
there weren't any burn errors as far as i can remember.
This may be an indicator.

i'm running getdataback now
In other words what are you saying?
i_XpUser

cyclic redundancy error
what is the DVDR speed?
some are 12x 8x etc...long time I received same error..I tried different dvdrs with different speeds.
this has to do with the maximum speed your dvd writer can write to disk
--------------------------
The above had to do with Burning. However, in your case, Cyclic Redundancy Errors also happens when transferring data of any type from one location to another. The weird part, however, is that sometimes it gives you that error and other times it actually lets you move the same file(s) that it had said it could not. I've always wanted to know as well why this happens. I need to research this further.
OVERRIDE

i used nero. the burner burns at the max speed of the dvdr, which is 16x. burned as data. no multisession. iso level 2, iso 9660, joliet, allow path depth more than 8 dirs, allow more than 255 chars in path, and allow more than 64 chars for joliet names. and it's finalized. burned it awhile ago, but i'm almost sure there were no errors; otherwise, i would've seen it and burned it again.
there were a few programs i used to extract the image off the disk, even from command line. it only partially worked; about half the image (top half) came out fine; it's the lower half that comes out gray.
jfilerecovery is a program that tries to extract/recovery files from corrupt sectors on a hdd or disk. it came out a little better; the gray part now shows pretty much what should be there, but it's distorted. like sections are shifted left or right and discoloration.
i quit the getdataback program as well; it was going to scan the entire dvd; would take about an hour and not sure if it's worth the time.
now, like i said, i have a dvd player that's capable of reading jpg files on a data disk. it played the particular image fine without any part of it missing or distortion. why can't i duplicate it on my optical drives?
anymore ideas?

Your optical drive may be heading south... try the disk on someone else's PC.
Once I thought I was wrong, now I'm not so sure!
