Can't connect to SMTP through router

I am running winXP home with a Dlink 704P 4-port router on cable modem. All has been working fine until a few days ago. My ISP installed new mail servers and ever since I cannot send email when the router is involved. The new mail servers required a slight change to the smtp setting but this new setting will not work when I attempt to send mail with the router involved. When I disconnect the router and hook up my PC directly to the cable modem I can connect to the new smtp server and send email. But with the router setup again I get a "connected" indication from OE 6.0 when sending but it always times out without sending the email. Have tried resetting the router and re-configuring it. Networking and web surfing is unaffected by all this...the only symptom is that I can't send email when connected through the router. ISP says not their problem since it works fine when setup directly from cable modem minus the LAN. Any Ideas? So far D-Link is stumped.

Well Thanks, but it's not a Linksys router its a D-Link and I have reconfigured it and have even done a factory reset of the router and my problem is still the same. Everything router function works great, I just can't connect to my smtp server through the router.
