can't connect to internet after failed Win8 trial from XP

May 2, 2012 at 14:46:17
Specs: Windows XP, Pentium 4 3.06GHz/ 960MB
A co-worker brought me his computer after his girlfriend clicked on a link to a trial for Windows 8, which somehow caused the internet to stop working. I've tried using Firefox, and using both wireless and wired connections to troubleshoot, but no luck. Wireless adapter registers the network and connects just fine, but doesn't connect to the internet. Comp is a HP Pavilion a1620y. He says it was having some problems so he took it in to Staples where they "gutted it and replaced everything" though I'm not sure what all that entails, as it's running a P4 3.06GHz and 960 MB of RAM. He says it was working fine after that until his girlfriend clicked on a link to download Windows 8. Wondering if it needs a new driver, or it's just borked. Thoughts?

Thanks, I told him I couldn't fix it right away, so he took it back. He may try and have someone who has the time fix it, but he said he may also have me build him a new one, given how old the parts in there are. They may be new to the case, but we're still talking about a P4 and less than a gig of RAM.

Sounds like an infection. I doubt it's a hardware issue.

Yeah, a ran a quick scan with MBAM b/c I needed to get back to work, and it found a few things, but didn't fix the problem. At this point I'll let someone else deal with it. Thanks though.
