Can't change desktop background. Wh

I have a problem. I cannot change my desktop background. I had chosen a picture from my files to be the background, and it changed to that fine. I no longer want that picture, however, and XP will not let me change it to something else. I right clik the desktop, then properties, then on the desktop tab, I choose something different from what I have, clik apply, then okay. It won't change. I've tried it three times. Then I tried rebooting to see if that would do it, but it would not. Does anyone know what is wrong here?
