printscreen is a Windows or DOS program. Not going to work prior to the OS booting.
Try using a digital camera.

Use a digital camera to photograph the screens you want. After XP has loaded upload the prints to your PC and you're in business!
Once I thought I was wrong, now I'm not so sure!

It won''t work prior to your OS loading because the Clipbook service hasn't started yet.
Install VMWare and install your OS as a VM. Then take a screenshot of that VM booting. "Computer security." — Oxymoron

Thanks all. I never knew all this.
What is VMWare - can anyone recommend a specific one?
When people say use a digital camera do you mean capturing a picture as it loads up from standing in front of your monitor for example or using it to somehow take a picture from within the computer? How?

VM Ware is a Virtual Machine. It a rather complicated way of performing a relatively simple task.
Just stand in front of the monitor and take a photograph of the VDU as the computer boots. Don't get to close though or you will get distortion. You can edit the picture once Windows has booted and you have uploaded the pictures.
If the BIOS screen flashes past to quickly you can use the pause key to pause the boot process so you can photograph it. Press any key to continue.

Pause or scroll lock will both work. Once you are done tap any key to resume the POST.
