Can't burn DVDs

May 16, 2005 at 09:45:49
Specs: win xp, 40gb

I've never bruned DVDs before so this may be something easy to fix. I bought Maxell DVD-R 4.7 gb up to 6hrs with a purple bottom. First off when I put them in the dvd/cd burner the disc shows up as a cd. When I try to burn a file with Windows Media Player 10, set on audio cd it shows the disc has 105 mins. When I try on HighMat it shows the disc has only 397 mb. When I try to drag the file to the cd icon, it says "windows media player has encountered a problem, do you want to continue" so I click no. I also went to which was a link that came in the package with the dvds that has drives and updates so I can burn dvds, but the site is missing pages and some are under constructions, so I can't download any updates. Also, I need to know if I can change real player files to window media player files. Thanks for any help in advance!!

1. Are you sure you have a DVD-R or DVD-RW?

They do make DVD/CD-RW combo drives. These drives only burn CD's not DVD's.

2. Do you have DVD burning software?

Windows XP supports CD burning, but does not support DVD burning. In order to burn DVD's you will need to use the DVD burning software that came with the DVD-RW/DVD-R drive drive.

If at first you dont fix it, Try harder!

The drive shows up as "DVD-RW Drive" and on the hardware tab it shows up as "Sony DVD RW DW-D22A." As far as I know windows has a cd burning software but I was told the drive had what I needed to burn both cds and dvds. I also tried to go to the site but like I said it didn't work. Do you know where I can get a free or trail buring software so I can check and see if its lacking software? Also, could it be that I am using DVD-R instead of DVD-RW?

John3 has answered your question, you need to install DVD burning software. XP does not have this built in. "I was told the drive had what I needed to burn both cds and dvds". that may be but you still need to install software that will burn DVD's.

Nero has a 30 day trial that will burn your DVD's

Sony's DVD-RW drives ship with a program called B's recorder gold.

Check you programs.

all programs
B's Recorder Gold

If you do not have the software....
Was the DVD-RW part of the system when you purchased the PC or was it added in?

If it was part of the system then the software should be installed. If not check the CD's that came with the system.

If the drive was added in then find the CD's from the drive and install the software.

Other wise you will need to purchase DVD burning software.

If at first you dont fix it, Try harder!

I found a burning software that works great, but I need to convert the .rm files I have to a windows media file or a dvd. The DVDs I've burned work on any computer but since they are real player files, DVD players like a playstion won't play them. Also, I've tried the tinra from divx digest but when it converted all I got was sound and no picture. The rest of the converters I tried either want you to buy them or don't convert rm.
